Pfaff-Silberblau SCH-W Sluice Gate Jack

Model SCH-W | Capacity 1,500 kg to 10,000 kg | Lift 800 to 1,000 mm | Tensile or Pressure Load | Spring-Loaded Safety Crank | CE & UKCA

The Pfaff-Silberblau SCH-W is the purpose-designed sluice gate jack for opening and closing gates in sluices, weirs, and water management infrastructure. Unlike a standard steel jack, the SCH-W operates in both tensile (pulling) and pressure (pushing) modes along its rack, ideal for raising and lowering vertically-running gate components. The spring-loaded safety crank permanently holds the gate closed under pressure, essential for water management applications. Four capacities (1.5 to 10 t) with Sifeku safety crank (1.5 to 5 t) or Siku crank (10 t).

CE & UKCA Marked | DIN 7355 Compliant | German Engineered

Pfaff-Silberblau is part of the Columbus McKinnon group, one of the world's largest manufacturers of motion technology and lifting equipment. This product is CE marked (EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC) and UKCA marked (UK Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008), manufactured to DIN 7355 (Steel jacks acc. to DIN), and is supplied with a Declaration of Conformity. LOLER 1998 thorough examinations are required every 12 months by a competent person after initial certification.

Operates in both tensile and pressure modes. Pressure force reduced with larger lift (per Euler loading case II). Sluice gate systems often require additional engineering analysis, complete the Pfaff Technical Questionnaire for system specification.

Key Features

  • Tensile and pressure operation: Pulls and pushes loads, essential for opening and closing sluice gates.
  • Spring-loaded safety crank (Sifeku): Permanently holds gate closed under pressure on 1.5-5 t models.
  • Long lift travel: 800 to 1,000 mm, matched to typical sluice gate stroke requirements.
  • Hardened gearing parts: Low wear for high-cycle sluice gate operation.
  • Sluice gate system support: Pfaff provides Technical Questionnaire for complete system specification including manual, motor, and AUMA rotary drive integration.

Suitable Applications

Specialist jack for water management infrastructure. Applications: water treatment plant sluice gates, irrigation channel weir gates, flood defence emergency operation, canal locks, hydroelectric station gates, aquaculture, and industrial bulk material flow gates.

How to Use the Pfaff-Silberblau SCH-W Sluice Gate Jack

  1. Verify application: Confirm tensile (pulling) or pressure (pushing) operation required.
  2. Mount the jack: Permanently mounted via base plate to a structural frame above the gate.
  3. Connect to gate: Lower rack end connects to gate via yoke, eye bolt, or matched hardware.
  4. Verify free movement: Manually verify gate moves through full lift travel before load.
  5. Operate the crank: Apply steady rotation. Sifeku (1.5-5 t) has spring-loaded retention; Siku (10 t) is standard 360ยฐ.
  6. Hold gate closed: When crank released, load brake + (Sifeku) spring loading maintains gate position against pressure.

Warning: Sluice gate installations involve significant hydraulic forces. System specification should be carried out by a qualified engineer using the Pfaff Technical Questionnaire approach.

Safety Information

  • Always inspect the jack before each use (base plate, rack, gear housing, crank).
  • Never exceed the Working Load Limit stamped on the jack body.
  • Use only the manufacturer-approved crank, never with extension bars or mechanical drives.
  • Never use on soft ground, ice, or unstable surfaces.
  • Never side-load, angle-load, or use the jack to lift persons.
  • For sustained load support, place additional supports beside the jack before any work beneath the load.
  • LOLER 1998 thorough examination required every 12 months where used as lifting equipment.
  • Sluice gate jack systems require qualified engineering specification, contact us with a Technical Questionnaire.
  • Sustained pressure on closed gate is normal, the Sifeku crank is designed for this condition.
  • Inspect gate-to-jack connection (yoke, eye bolt) at each LOLER examination.

Inspection and Maintenance

Regular inspection of rack, gearbox, gate connection, and spring-loaded crank. In water environments, lubricate more frequently than typical industrial use. Inspect Sifeku spring for fatigue. WOLFF Onsite provides LOLER inspection.

Optional Accessories

  • Pfaff Cranks: Sifeku (1.5-5 t) and Siku (10 t) replacement cranks.
  • Sluice gate system design: WOLFF Onsite liaises with Pfaff engineering on Technical Questionnaire-based system specification.
  • Motor drive options: Three-phase motor drives with manual emergency override available.
  • AUMA rotary drive: Can be integrated with SCH-W for motorised operation.
  • Travel limit switches and safety clutch: Electrical cut-out options available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does SCH-W differ from a standard steel jack?

Operates in both tensile and pressure modes along the rack rather than supporting vertical load on a claw. The Sifeku crank also holds the gate closed under sustained pressure, a feature standard jacks don't have.

Q: What's the spring-loaded safety crank do?

The Sifeku engages with positive socket lock and a spring-loaded retainer holds it on the gearbox shaft. When released, the load brake plus spring loading maintains gate position against sustained pressure.

Q: Can it be motor-driven?

Yes, commonly used with three-phase motor drives and a manual crank for emergency override. AUMA rotary drives are a common option.

Q: Does Pfaff offer sluice gate system design?

Yes, via the Technical Questionnaire covering site conditions, gate dimensions, water levels, manual or motor drive, accessories, and arrangement. Contact us for the questionnaire.

Q: Can the SCH-W handle full hydraulic pressure on a closed gate?

The rated tensile/pressure load (1,500 to 10,000 kg) is the design load for both directions. For a closed sluice gate under hydraulic pressure, the SCH-W holds the gate against the equivalent force in pressure mode. Pressure force is slightly reduced with larger lift travel (per Euler loading case II for column buckling), this is accounted for in the published capacity figures.

Q: Is the SCH-W certified for water treatment plant use?

The SCH-W is CE marked and UKCA marked. Water treatment installations have additional certification requirements (e.g. WRAS, DWI for drinking water; Environment Agency approvals for waste water) that must be met at system level. Contact our team and your water management consultant for the specific approvals required for your installation.

Q: How often does the SCH-W need inspection?

LOLER 1998 (UK) requires thorough examination every 12 months by a competent person. For sluice gates in continuous duty, more frequent inspection may be appropriate, contact us to specify.
