Lifting Equipment

Start with the load, not the product

Weight, shape, centre of gravity and how the load will be attached decide the equipment. A load with no rated lifting points needs a different approach to one with certified eyes, and an awkward or flexible load needs support rather than just capacity. Getting this settled first rules out most of the range and makes the rest obvious.

Below-the-hook is a system

The crane or hoist is only part of it. Slings, shackles, beams and clamps all sit between the hook and the load, and each one has a rating that must suit the load and the angle it works at. The weakest element rates the whole assembly.

Angle changes everything

Multi-leg slings do not share the load equally as the angle widens. The tension in each leg rises as the legs move away from vertical, which is why a sling that looks adequate can be badly overloaded in practice. Where legs will work at a wide angle, plan for it rather than discovering it on the day.

Certification and records

Lifting equipment and accessories carry certification and require periodic thorough examination. Buy from a supplier who provides the paperwork with the goods, and keep it — the records are as much part of the equipment as the hardware.

Common questions
Where do I start when specifying lifting gear?

With the load. Weight, dimensions, where the centre of gravity sits and how it can be attached will narrow the options faster than browsing product types.

Does everything come with certification?

Lifting equipment and accessories are supplied with the relevant certification. Keep it with your records, as you will need it for thorough examination.

Do I need a spreader beam or will slings do?

Slings work where the load can take the inward compression of angled legs. A beam or frame is needed where the load must be lifted with vertical legs, or where lifting points are wide apart.
