Conquip Kerb Gripper

Multi-functional scissor kerb lifter (manual kerb grab) for laying HB kerbs and slabs. Two-operator manual lift or machine-lift via central lifting eye. Adjustable grip range 500-1100mm. WLL 100kg.

The Conquip Kerb Gripper, also known as a manual kerb grab or scissor kerb lifter, is a multi-functional tool for laying HB kerbs, large kerbstones and paving slabs. The scissor mechanism grips securely as the lift commences and releases automatically on set-down, giving fast, repeatable cycles โ€” usually lifted manually by two operators, or machine-lifted via the central lifting eye for longer distances and heavier loads. The wide adjustable grip range of 500mm to 1100mm covers a broad variety of kerb and slab sizes.

Key Features

  • Scissor mechanism automatically grips the kerb under load and releases when set down
  • Quick and easily adjustable grip range to lift a variety of kerb and slab sizes (500mm to 1100mm)
  • Two-operator manual lift -- one on each handle -- for direct kerb gang use
  • Central lifting eye allows machine lifting for longer distances or heavier kerb sizes
  • Rubber grips on the handles for operator comfort and slip resistance
  • Manufactured from high-quality steel for longevity and reduced replacement costs
  • Multi-functional tool covers HB kerbs, large kerbstones, and paving slabs in one piece of kit

More About This Product

The Conquip Kerb Gripper, also known as a manual kerb grab or scissor kerb lifter, is a multi-functional kerb-handling tool typically used to lay HB kerbs, large kerbstones, or paving slabs. The scissor mechanism grips the kerb securely as the lift commences and releases automatically when the load is set down, giving fast, repeatable cycles for kerb gangs working their way along a kerb run. The Kerb Gripper is most commonly lifted manually by two operators -- one on each handle -- but it can also be machine-lifted for longer distances and heavier loads using the central lifting eye. The wide adjustable grip range of 500mm to 1100mm covers a broad variety of kerb and slab sizes without needing to swap tools. Rubber grips on the handles improve operator comfort and reduce the risk of slipping.

Suitable Applications

The Kerb Gripper is the standard kerb-laying tool for civils, infrastructure, and major housing projects where HB kerbs, large kerbstones, or paving slabs are being installed in volume. It is particularly well suited to long, repetitive kerb runs where the automatic grip and release mechanism delivers fast cycle times. The wide grip range also makes it a versatile choice for crews handling mixed kerb sizes on the same project. For smaller manual kerbstones, see the Kerb Stone Handles. For lifting kerbs, steps, and pre-formed sections with a mechanical grab, see the Kerb Lifter.

How to Use

  1. Carry out a pre-use inspection: scissor mechanism, lifting eye, handle grips, pivot points
  2. Adjust the grip range to suit the kerb or slab size being lifted
  3. Position the gripper over the kerb with the jaws open
  4. Lower the gripper so the jaws engage either side of the kerb
  5. Lift -- the scissor action automatically tightens the grip on the kerb under load
  6. For manual use: two operators lift in unison, one per handle
  7. For machine use: connect a sling or hook to the central lifting eye
  8. Transport the kerb to the laying position at a controlled speed
  9. Lower the kerb gently into position -- the scissor action releases automatically as the load is set down

Warning:
Working Load Limit of 100kg must not be exceeded. Many large concrete kerbs weigh well over 100kg -- verify kerb weight before each lift. The grip range adjustment must be set correctly and locked before lifting. Inspect the gripper before every use under LOLER 1998. For manual use, both operators must lift together to maintain balance.

Safety Information

  • Working Load Limit of 100kg must not be exceeded under any circumstance
  • Verify kerb or slab weight before every lift -- many HB kerbs exceed 100kg
  • Pre-use inspection required before every lift; thorough examination every six months under LOLER 1998
  • Grip range adjustment must be set correctly and locked for the kerb size being lifted
  • Rubber handle grips must be intact and free from damage; replace if worn
  • Both operators must lift together for manual use to keep the load balanced
  • Grippers with damaged scissor mechanisms, deformed jaws, or worn pivots must be removed from service immediately
  • Do not lift kerbs that exceed the grip range -- partial grip will fail under load
  • Wear cut-resistant gloves and steel-toe boots when handling kerbs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a manual kerb grab?

A manual kerb grab is another name for a Kerb Gripper -- a scissor-type lifting tool that automatically grips a kerb when lifted and releases it when set down. It can be operated manually by two people or hooked up to a crane via the central lifting eye.

Q: What's the difference between a Kerb Gripper and a Kerb Lifter?

The Kerb Gripper is a manual scissor lifter for HB kerbs and slabs (WLL 100kg, two-person manual lift). The Kerb Lifter is a mechanical grab for kerbs, steps, and pre-formed sections (WLL 600kg, designed for excavator or crane lift). Choose the Gripper for kerb gang work; choose the Lifter for heavier mechanical placement.

Q: What is an HB kerb?

HB stands for "high-back" -- a tall kerb profile commonly used on roads, slip lanes, and traffic-separation kerbs in highways construction. They are heavier and larger than standard kerbs and benefit from the wider grip range of the Kerb Gripper.

Q: Can one person operate the Kerb Gripper?

Conquip recommend using two operators for manual lifting -- one per handle -- to keep the load balanced and reduce strain. For solo operations, machine-lift via the central lifting eye is the safer choice.

Q: Does the gripper need adjusting between kerb sizes?

Yes -- the grip range is quickly and easily adjustable from 500mm to 1100mm to suit the kerb being lifted. Setting the correct grip range is essential for safe operation; the jaws must engage fully on both sides of the kerb before the lift commences.
