Fall Arrest Blocks

When a block is the right choice

A self-retracting lifeline keeps the line short at all times, so both the fall distance and the clearance needed underneath are much smaller than with a shock-absorbing lanyard. That makes it the usual answer where there is limited space below the working position.

Clearance

Before choosing any fall arrest equipment, work out the clearance you actually have below the anchor and compare it to the manufacturer's stated requirement for the product. The figures vary between products, and this is the calculation most often skipped.

Edge-rated blocks

A standard block assumes the line runs vertically to an overhead anchor. If the line can pass over an edge — leading-edge work, or an anchor at foot level — you need a block specifically rated and tested for edge use.

After a fall

Any block that has arrested a fall should be withdrawn from service and returned to the manufacturer or an authorised service centre. Internal damage is not visible from the outside.

Common questions
How much clearance does a fall arrest block need?

It varies by product. Check the manufacturer's stated clearance requirement and compare it to the actual distance below your anchor point before specifying.

What is an edge-rated block?

One tested for use where the lifeline can pass over an edge, such as leading-edge or foot-level anchor work. Standard blocks assume a vertical line to an overhead anchor.

Can a block be reused after arresting a fall?

No. Withdraw it and return it to the manufacturer or an authorised service centre. Damage may not be visible externally.

How often should blocks be inspected?

A check before every use, plus periodic inspection by a competent person and recertification at the manufacturer's stated interval.

Which brands do you stock for Fall Arrest Blocks?

We supply Yale and Kratos. Ranges vary, so check the brand page for the full listing.
