Harnesses

Fall arrest or work positioning

A fall arrest harness has a dorsal attachment point between the shoulder blades. Front attachment points suit ladder climbing and rescue. Side D-rings are intended for work positioning — leaning back into the harness — and are not designed to arrest a fall, so check what each point on your harness is rated for.

Fit

A harness that fits badly will not perform as intended. The dorsal point should sit between the shoulder blades, the chest strap across the sternum, and the leg straps snug. Where work at height is regular, buy by size rather than relying on universal adjustment.

Rescue planning

Someone left suspended in a harness after a fall needs recovering quickly. Any work at height plan should include how that will happen, and trauma relief straps are a low-cost addition worth considering.

Common questions
What are the different attachment points for?

The dorsal point between the shoulder blades is the fall arrest attachment. Front points suit climbing and rescue. Side D-rings are for work positioning and are not intended to arrest a fall.

How should a harness fit?

Dorsal point between the shoulder blades, chest strap across the sternum, leg straps snug. A loose harness will not perform as designed.

How long does a harness last?

Follow the manufacturer's stated service life. Withdraw it after any fall, or if the webbing shows cuts, abrasion, chemical damage or heat glazing.

Which brands do you stock for Harnesses?
