Pfaff-Silberblau SW-W Alpha Wall-Mounted Wire Rope Winch

Model SW-W Alpha | Capacity 300 kg โ€“ 1,000 kg | Wall-Mounted Manual Winch | Integrated Crank with Load-Pressure Brake | Stamped Steel Housing | Pre-Fitted Galvanised Wire Rope | CE & UKCA Marked | Made in Germany

The Pfaff-Silberblau SW-W Alpha is the premium wall-mounted manual wire rope winch for fixed-position lifting across workshops, plant rooms, equipment installations and on-site construction. Four capacity grades โ€” 300 kg, 500 kg, 750 kg and 1,000 kg โ€” share a compact stamped steel housing, spur gear drive and integrated crank with self-acting load-pressure brake that holds the load automatically when the handle is released. Each winch ships with pre-fitted galvanised wire rope, with zinc-plated parts and a special drum coating protecting against corrosion in damp or outdoor environments.

Key Features

  • Integrated load-pressure brake: Self-acting brake holds the load in position automatically the moment the operator releases the crank handle โ€” no separate locking action required. Smooth controlled descent is achieved by cranking in the reverse direction against the brake.
  • Lightweight stamped steel housing: Robust pressed-steel body construction gives a compact, low-weight winch that is straightforward to mount on conventional wall fixings.
  • Spur gear drive: Open spur gearing delivers the lifting force from the crank to the drum; gear ratios sized to keep the hand crank force manageable across the capacity range.
  • Pre-fitted galvanised wire rope: Each winch ships ready to use with the correct diameter of rope already terminated at the drum and the working end fitted as standard โ€” no separate rope assembly required.
  • Rope lead-offs to all directions: Flexible rope routing allows the same winch to be installed in any orientation against the wall, with the rope leaving the drum in any direction the application requires.
  • Zinc-plated parts plus special drum coating: Corrosion protection on all exposed components, plus a dedicated drum surface treatment that protects the rope from drum-side wear and the drum from rope-side abrasion.
  • Easy wall mounting: Designed for fast installation against any structurally adequate wall โ€” four bolt fixings and the winch is ready for use.
  • Same footprint across all four capacities: Specify the higher-capacity model later without reworking the wall mount.

Technical Specifications

Model Article No. Capacity (kg) Rope Diameter (mm) Rope Length, Top Layer (m) Lift per Crank Rev. (mm)
SW-W Alpha 300 30272006 300 5 28 57
SW-W Alpha 500 30272005 500 6 20 55
SW-W Alpha 750 30272002 750 7 26 45
SW-W Alpha 1000 30272001 1,000 7 26 45

Capacity stated is the 1st-layer rated load. Lift per crank revolution applies at the top rope layer; the speed reduces as the drum fills with rope and the effective drum diameter increases. All four models share the same housing dimensions and wall-mounting footprint, making it easy to upgrade capacity within the range without modifying the wall fixings.

CE & UKCA Marked | ISO 9001 Manufactured | Made in Germany

Pfaff-Silberblau is a brand of Columbus McKinnon Industrial Products, the global leader in hoisting, lifting, and load-positioning equipment. This product is CE marked under the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and UKCA marked under the UK Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, with each unit shipped with an EC Declaration of Conformity. Manufactured under EN ISO 9001 certified processes โ€” the same quality management system applied across the wider Pfaff-silberblau, Yale, Stahl CraneSystems, and Tigrip product lines. Manual wire rope winches used for lifting loads in UK workplaces fall under LOLER 1998 and require Thorough Examination by a competent person at intervals not exceeding 12 months. PUWER 1998 also applies as work equipment. The inspection duty sits with the end user competent person rather than with the equipment supplier.

More About This Product

The Pfaff-Silberblau SW-W Alpha is the premium wall-mounted manual wire rope winch for fixed-position lifting applications across workshops, plant rooms, equipment installations, and on-site construction. Four capacity grades โ€” 300 kg, 500 kg, 750 kg, and 1,000 kg โ€” share the same compact stamped steel housing, spur gear drive, and integrated crank with self-acting load-pressure brake that holds the load automatically when the operator releases the handle. Each winch ships pre-fitted with galvanised wire rope (5 mm on the 300 kg model up to 7 mm on the 750 kg and 1,000 kg) at standard lengths between 20 m and 28 m, with rope lead-offs available in all directions for flexible installation. Zinc-plated parts and a special drum coating protect the winch against corrosion in damp or outdoor environments.

Suitable Applications

The Pfaff-Silberblau SW-W Alpha is the standard wall-mounted winch for fixed-position lifting tasks across workshops, plant rooms, equipment installations, agricultural buildings, and on-site construction. Typical applications include lifting and lowering heavy doors, hatches, gates, and barriers; raising or lowering hatches and access covers in plant rooms; lifting feed and material delivery to elevated work positions; agricultural use for grain pit covers, hay loaders, and silo access; and small-scale construction lifting where a permanent winch installation is preferred over portable equipment. For higher capacities up to 1,500 kg with a wider rope-diameter range and broader speed selection, see the Pfaff-Silberblau MWS wall-mounted winch range. For console-mounted lighter-duty applications, see the SW-K GAMMA or SW-K LAMBDA winches.

How to Use the Pfaff-Silberblau SW-W Alpha

  1. Verify the mounting: Before each use, verify the four wall-fixing bolts remain fully torqued and the wall substrate is undamaged. The mounting must be capable of supporting the full rated capacity plus an appropriate safety factor.
  2. Inspect the rope: Visually check the full working length of the wire rope for kinks, broken strands, surface damage, or wear concentrations. Remove from service if any defect is found.
  3. Inspect the brake: Verify the load-pressure brake holds correctly by attaching a light test load, raising it a short distance, then releasing the crank. The load should hold without back-driving.
  4. Attach the load: Connect the working end of the rope to the load via a suitable rated hook, sling, or shackle. Ensure all connections are secure and any hook safety latches are fully engaged.
  5. Verify the rope alignment: The rope should run cleanly from the drum through any guide or sheave to the load, without rubbing against the housing or wall.
  6. Lift the load: Crank the handle smoothly to raise the load. Avoid sudden starts or stops. The brake engages automatically each time the crank is released.
  7. Lower the load: Crank the handle in the reverse direction against the brake to lower at a controlled rate. The brake provides smooth descent โ€” the load does not free-fall.
  8. Secure the load before unattended use: If the load is to be left suspended for any period, transfer it to a dedicated load-holding support (cradle, secondary chain, or structural rest). The winch brake is a holding device, not a long-term load anchor.

Warning:
Wire rope winches are lifting devices and must not be used to lift, lower, or transport personnel. Never exceed the rated capacity stamped on the winch body. Never use a winch with damaged rope, distorted housing, or a brake that does not hold smoothly. The winch is for vertical lifting from a wall mount only โ€” pulling at an angle to the rope drum axis is not permitted.

Safety Information

  • Verify the wall mounting before each use โ€” bolts torqued, wall substrate undamaged.
  • Inspect the wire rope for the full working length each shift; remove from service immediately at first sign of broken strands, kinks, or surface damage.
  • Never exceed the rated capacity stamped on the winch body.
  • Never use the winch to lift, lower, or transport personnel.
  • Test brake operation with a light load before each lifting operation.
  • Keep at least three turns of rope on the drum at full extension โ€” never run the rope off the drum.
  • Do not stand under the suspended load. Position yourself clear of the load path.
  • Transfer the load to dedicated support before leaving it suspended for any extended period.
  • Workplace operators must establish a Thorough Examination regime under LOLER 1998 / PUWER 1998 at intervals not exceeding 12 months.

Inspection and Maintenance

The SW-W Alpha is designed for low routine maintenance with the load-pressure brake being the primary service item. Before each use, inspect the wire rope for the full working length for kinks, broken strands, or surface damage; verify the brake holds correctly with a light test load; check the housing for impact damage and the wall mounting for any loosening. The spur gear and drum bearings benefit from periodic light greasing per the OEM manual schedule. Replacement wire ropes are available from CMCO in matched lengths and diameters โ€” only manufacturer-specified rope assemblies should be fitted, since rope substitution affects the rated capacity. WOLFF Onsite provides LOLER-certified Thorough Examination, spare parts, replacement rope sets, and full overhaul for the Pfaff-Silberblau SW-W Alpha range.

Optional Accessories

  • Replacement wire rope assemblies: Matched diameter and length, pre-terminated for each capacity in the SW-W Alpha range.
  • Wire rope pulley blocks (DSRB): Pfaff-Silberblau DSRB pulley blocks deflect the rope at 90ยฐ or 180ยฐ to reposition the working line or double the pulling capacity of the winch.
  • Wall mounting plate sets: Reinforced mounting plates for installation on lightweight walls or partitions where direct fixing into structural masonry is not possible.
  • Wire rope grease and corrosion protection: Service consumables for routine maintenance of the rope.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's the difference between the Alpha and the standard SW-W (SG)?

The Alpha is the premium SW-W variant with an integrated crank-mounted load-pressure brake, stamped steel housing optimised for outdoor / damp environments, and special drum coating. The standard SW-W (SG) uses a different gear configuration ("special gear" SG version) and covers a wider capacity range from 80 kg up to 750 kg. Choose Alpha where the load-pressure brake matters and the application is in the 300 kg โ€“ 1,000 kg range; choose SW-W (SG) for lighter capacities or where the SG gearbox better suits the lift speed required.

Q: How does the integrated load-pressure brake work?

The brake is self-acting โ€” load pressure on the drum keeps the brake mechanism engaged whenever the crank is not being turned. To lift, the operator cranks against the brake and the brake releases automatically with each crank revolution. To lower, the operator cranks in the opposite direction; the brake provides smooth controlled descent. Releasing the crank at any time during raising or lowering causes the brake to engage and hold the load.

Q: Can I leave a load suspended on the winch?

The integrated brake will hold a load reliably for short periods (during a work step, or while the operator repositions). For extended suspension โ€” overnight, between shifts, or as part of a permanent installation โ€” best practice is to transfer the load to a dedicated load-holding support (cradle, secondary chain, or structural rest). The winch brake is a holding device, not a long-term load anchor.

Q: What wall structure do I need to mount the winch?

The mounting must be capable of supporting the full rated capacity plus an appropriate safety factor โ€” typically 4ร— rated load is recommended for the wall fixing. Structural masonry, reinforced concrete, or a properly braced steel frame are all suitable. Lightweight partition walls without structural backing are not sufficient. If in doubt, consult a structural engineer before installation.

Q: Can I shorten the rope to fit my installation?

The wire rope is pre-terminated at the drum and at the working end, and the rated capacity is calculated for the supplied rope diameter and termination type. Field-modifying the rope (cutting, re-terminating) alters the rated capacity and voids the manufacturer's Declaration of Conformity. If a shorter rope is required, contact WOLFF Onsite for a replacement assembly cut and terminated to your required length.

Q: Does the SW-W Alpha need LOLER inspection?

Yes โ€” manual wire rope winches used for lifting loads in UK workplaces fall under LOLER 1998 and require Thorough Examination by a competent person at intervals not exceeding 12 months. PUWER 1998 applies as work equipment. WOLFF Onsite provides full LOLER inspection across the Pfaff-Silberblau winch range.
