Hand Chain Hoists

How they work

A hand chain hoist lifts a load vertically using a hand chain over a geared wheel, with a load brake that holds position when you stop pulling. No power is needed, which is why they suit remote positions and occasional lifts.

Height of lift

Specify the height of lift you actually need. Extra load chain adds weight and cost, and a hoist with far more chain than the job requires is harder to handle. The hand chain also needs to reach the operator comfortably.

Suspension

Check what the hoist will hang from. A top hook needs a suitable anchor point; a trolley needs to match the beam flange. The suspension arrangement must be rated for at least the hoist capacity.

Common questions
What is the difference between a chain block and a lever hoist?

A chain block lifts vertically using a hand chain from an overhead point. A lever hoist uses a ratchet lever, works in any orientation and suits pulling as well as lifting.

What height of lift should I choose?

The height you actually need. Excess load chain adds weight and cost, and the hand chain should reach the operator comfortably.

What can I hang a chain block from?

A rated anchor point, a suitable beam via a trolley or clamp, or a purpose-designed gantry. The suspension must be rated for at least the hoist capacity.
