Storage

Match the store to the contents

General tools and consumables suit a standard steel box or cupboard. Anything hazardous needs a unit designed for it, with a liquid-tight sump and clear identification. Gas cylinders need ventilation and restraint rather than a sealed cabinet. Storing hazardous items in a general unit is a common and easily avoided compliance failure.

Security level

Site theft is opportunistic more often than determined. A visible, well-secured unit deters most of it. Where high-value tools are left on site overnight, a unit designed and tested for security is worth the difference over a standard steel box.

Moving it and getting it there

Check how the unit will be lifted, whether it needs forklift pockets or lifting eyes, and whether it will pass through the access you have. Flat-pack units solve the access problem where a welded unit cannot be brought in. Delivery is kerbside, so plan the last few metres.

Common questions
Can I store chemicals in a standard site box?

No. Hazardous substances need a unit designed for the purpose, with a sump to contain spills and clear identification of the contents.

How secure do I need?

Depends what is inside and whether it stays on site overnight. For high-value tools, a unit designed and tested for security is worth the difference.

Can these be moved once loaded?

Many have forklift pockets or lifting eyes. Check the unit is rated to be lifted loaded before doing so, as some are not.
