Hoists and Trolleys

Chain block, lever hoist or powered

A chain block lifts vertically from an overhead point using a hand chain. A lever hoist works in any orientation and is designed for pulling and tensioning as well as lifting, which makes it the choice for horizontal work. Pneumatic and electric hoists suit higher-cycle work where hand operation is impractical.

Matching the trolley

A trolley needs to fit the beam flange width and be rated for at least the hoist capacity. Push trolleys suit lighter loads and short travel; geared trolleys give more control on heavier loads or where the beam is not level. Measure the flange before ordering.

Headroom

Headroom is the distance from the beam to the hook at its highest point, and it reduces the lift you actually get. Low-headroom combinations recover useful height where the beam sits close to the working position.

Common questions
What is the difference between a chain block and a lever hoist?

A chain block lifts vertically using a hand chain. A lever hoist uses a ratchet lever, works in any orientation and suits pulling and tensioning as well as lifting.

How do I choose a beam trolley?

Match it to the beam flange width and to at least the hoist capacity. Push trolleys suit light loads and short travel; geared trolleys give control on heavier loads or sloping beams.

What is headroom?

The distance between the beam and the hook at its highest position. It reduces usable lift, so choose a low-headroom combination where the beam is close to the work.
