Yale Restraint Lanyard with Screw Gate Snap Hooks

12mm Rope Restraint Lanyard | 1m, 1.5m or 2m | Fixed or Adjustable | Screw Gate or Scaffold Hook | EN 354 and EN 358 Compliant

The Yale Restraint Lanyard is a 12 mm kernmantle rope lanyard for restraint and work positioning applications โ€” not for fall arrest. A restraint lanyard prevents the user from reaching a fall hazard in the first place rather than arresting a fall after it begins, so no energy absorber is included and the lanyard is lighter and lower-profile than fall arrest equivalents. Five configurations cover 1 m, 1.5 m and 2 m fixed and adjustable lengths, with optional scaffold hook end-connectors; manufactured by Columbus McKinnon under the Yale brand with test certificate and operating manual.

Key Features

  • 12 mm kernmantle rope construction โ€” abrasion-resistant, durable for daily site use
  • Restraint and work positioning use โ€” EN 358 compliant โ€” prevents the user from reaching a fall hazard
  • Five configurations โ€” 1 m, 1.5 m, 2 m fixed, 2 m adjustable, and 2 m adjustable with scaffold hook
  • Adjustable variants โ€” allow the user to set the working length precisely to suit the task
  • Optional scaffold hook โ€” direct attachment to scaffold tubes for fast set-up
  • EN 362 compliant connectors โ€” self-closing, self-locking, minimum strength 22 kN
  • Compatible with side D-rings โ€” connects to the work positioning side D-rings on Yale Three Point, Four Point, and Riggers harnesses

Restraint lanyards do not include an energy absorber as no fall is intended. The adjustable variants allow the user to set the working length precisely to match the restraint plan.

More About This Product

The Yale Restraint Lanyard is a 12 mm kernmantle rope lanyard intended for restraint and work positioning applications โ€” not for fall arrest. A restraint lanyard prevents the user from reaching a fall hazard in the first place, rather than arresting a fall after it has begun. Because no fall is intended to occur, restraint lanyards do not include an energy absorber and are typically lighter and lower-profile than fall arrest lanyards. Five configurations cover 1 m, 1.5 m, and 2 m fixed and adjustable lengths, with optional scaffold hook end-connectors. Manufactured by Columbus McKinnon under the Yale lifting brand, supplied with a manufacturer's test certificate and operating manual.

Suitable Applications

Suited to flat roof working, work near roof edges, scaffold platform working, and any task at height where the user can be prevented from reaching the fall hazard by restraint rather than by fall arrest. Restraint is the preferred control measure in the hierarchy of working at height โ€” prevent the user from reaching the edge rather than arresting a fall after it has begun. Where restraint is not possible (for example because the user must work right at the edge), a fall arrest system must be specified instead.

How to Use the Restraint Lanyard

  1. Plan the work area carefully โ€” measure the distance from the anchor point to the fall hazard. The lanyard length must be shorter than this distance so the user cannot reach the edge.
  2. Carry out a pre-use visual inspection of the lanyard โ€” rope, stitching, and both connectors.
  3. Verify the harness has been correctly fitted and the user understands the restraint plan.
  4. Confirm the anchor point is certified to a minimum strength of 12 kN.
  5. Connect the user end of the lanyard to the appropriate harness attachment point โ€” typically the work positioning side D-rings or rear D-ring.
  6. Connect the anchor end of the lanyard to the certified anchor point.
  7. If using an adjustable variant, set the working length so the user cannot reach the fall hazard, then lock the adjustment.
  8. Verify the restraint works in practice by walking the user out to the limit of the lanyard โ€” they must not be able to reach the edge.

Warning:
A restraint lanyard does not arrest a fall โ€” it prevents one. If there is any possibility the user could reach the fall hazard (for example because the anchor is positioned incorrectly, the lanyard is too long, or the work area changes), a fall arrest system must be used instead. Restraint lanyards do not include an energy absorber and must never be used as fall arrest equipment.

Safety Information

  • Always measure the work area and set the lanyard length so the user cannot reach the fall hazard.
  • Always verify the restraint works in practice before commencing work.
  • Always inspect the lanyard before each use.
  • Always attach to a certified anchor point rated to a minimum of 12 kN.
  • Always lock the adjustable variants at the chosen working length before use.
  • Never use a restraint lanyard for fall arrest โ€” it has no energy absorber and is not designed to arrest a fall.
  • Never modify, repair, or shorten the lanyard except via the integral adjustment mechanism.

Inspection and Maintenance

Inspect the rope, stitching, and both connectors before each use. Clean using warm water and mild detergent only. Air-dry away from direct heat. Store in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight and chemicals. Thorough examination by a competent person at least every 6 months under the Work at Height Regulations 2005. Maximum service life typically 10 years from date of first use, subject to inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between a restraint lanyard and a fall arrest lanyard?

A restraint lanyard prevents the user from reaching a fall hazard โ€” no fall is intended to occur. A fall arrest lanyard arrests a fall after it has begun. Restraint lanyards do not include an energy absorber and must never be used as fall arrest equipment.

Q: When should I choose restraint over fall arrest?

Restraint is the preferred control measure in the hierarchy of working at height โ€” prevent the user from reaching the edge rather than relying on fall arrest. Choose restraint where the work area can be clearly defined and the lanyard length and anchor position can be set so the user cannot reach the fall hazard.

Q: Why is there no energy absorber on a restraint lanyard?

Because no fall is intended to occur. Adding an energy absorber would allow the lanyard to stretch in a load event, potentially allowing the user to reach the fall hazard โ€” defeating the purpose of restraint.

Q: Which D-ring should I connect a restraint lanyard to?

Typically the work positioning side D-rings on a three-point, four-point, or riggers harness. The rear D-ring can also be used. The front D-ring is generally reserved for fall arrest connection.

Q: How do I choose the length?

Measure the distance from the anchor point to the fall hazard. The lanyard length (including any user reach beyond the harness attachment point) must be shorter than this distance. Choose the shortest length that allows the user to reach the working area.

Q: Can the adjustable variants be adjusted under load?

No. Set and lock the adjustment before applying load. Never adjust the lanyard while it is loaded.

Q: How often should the lanyard be inspected?

Pre-use inspection before every use, thorough examination by a competent person every 6 months.
