Conquip Kerb Lifter

Mechanical kerb grab for safe handling of kerbs, steps, and other pre-formed sections. Automatic load and release mechanism, locating pin for quick adjustment. Crane or excavator lift via central lifting point, or manual via handles. Grip range 50-600mm. WLL 600kg.

The Conquip Kerb Lifter, also known as a mechanical kerb grab, is designed for the safe and efficient handling of kerbs, steps, and other pre-formed concrete sections. The automatic load and release mechanism engages the load as the lift commences and releases it cleanly when the kerb is set down -- delivering fast, repeatable cycles for kerb gangs and groundworks crews. The Kerb Lifter can be operated by crane, excavator, or other suitable lifting apparatus via the central lifting point, or manually by site personnel using the integrated handles when machinery is unavailable. This dual-mode capability reduces site downtime and gives crews the flexibility to keep working when plant is committed elsewhere. A locating pin allows quick adjustment of the grip range from 50mm to 600mm, covering most standard kerb, step, and pre-formed section sizes. Durable rubber grips ensure safe, secure handling and protect kerb finishes from marking.

Key Features

  • Automatic load and release mechanism for fast, repeatable lifting cycles
  • Locating pin allows quick adjustment of the grip range (50-600mm)
  • Durable rubber grips ensure safe handling and protect kerb finishes
  • Lifted by excavator, crane, or other suitable lifting apparatus via central lifting point -- reduces manual handling
  • Site personnel can also lift and operate the unit manually using the handles when machinery is unavailable
  • Heavy-duty 600kg WLL covers larger kerbs, steps, and pre-formed concrete sections
  • Compact 675mm length for easy storage and transport between work areas
  • Wide grip range (50-600mm) covers everything from small steps to substantial kerb sections

Suitable Applications

The Kerb Lifter is the standard tool for civils and infrastructure projects where kerbs, steps, and pre-formed concrete sections are being installed by excavator, crane, or telehandler. The 600kg WLL and dual-mode capability suit a wide range of housing, highways, and groundworks applications. The mechanical grab is particularly suited to long kerb runs, where machine-led placement gives faster cycle times than manual lifting. For smaller manual kerbstones, see the Kerb Stone Handles. For HB kerbs and slabs requiring a wider grip range, see the Kerb Gripper.

How to Use

  1. Carry out a pre-use inspection: locating pin, jaws, lifting point, handles, rubber grips
  2. Set the grip range using the locating pin to match the kerb or section being lifted
  3. Position the Kerb Lifter over the load with the jaws open
  4. Lower onto the kerb so the jaws straddle the load
  5. For machine lift: connect a sling or hook to the central lifting point
  6. For manual lift: position one operator on each handle
  7. Lift -- the automatic mechanism engages the jaws on the kerb under load
  8. Transport the load to the placement position at a controlled speed
  9. Lower gently -- the automatic mechanism releases the jaws cleanly when the kerb is set down

Warning: Working Load Limit of 600kg must not be exceeded. Verify kerb or section weight before every lift. The locating pin must be fully engaged and locked before lifting commences. Inspect the lifter before every use under LOLER 1998. Do not stand directly beneath a loaded Kerb Lifter during machine lifting.

Safety Information

  • Working Load Limit of 600kg must not be exceeded under any circumstance
  • Verify kerb or pre-formed section weight before every lift
  • Locating pin must be fully engaged and locked before any lift
  • Pre-use inspection required before every lift; thorough examination every six months under LOLER 1998
  • Rubber grips must be intact and free from oil, grease, or damage
  • Lifters with damaged jaws, broken locating pins, or worn lifting points must be removed from service immediately
  • Lifting must be carried out by a competent operator with a trained banksman or signaller for machine lifts
  • Do not stand directly beneath a loaded Kerb Lifter during machine lifting
  • Wear cut-resistant gloves and steel-toe boots when handling kerbs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a mechanical kerb grab?

A mechanical kerb grab is another name for a Kerb Lifter -- a kerb-handling tool with an automatic load and release mechanism that engages the load when lifted and releases it when set down. The Conquip Kerb Lifter can be used both with machinery (crane, excavator) and manually.

Q: How does the automatic load and release mechanism work?

The mechanism works mechanically: as the lift commences and the load is taken, the jaws are forced together by the load weight, gripping the kerb securely. As the kerb is set down and the load weight transfers off the jaws, the mechanism releases automatically. There is no electrical or hydraulic system involved -- it is a purely mechanical action.

Q: Can I use this with my excavator?

Yes -- the central lifting point connects to a chain sling, hook, or other lifting apparatus suitable for use with excavators, cranes, telehandlers, or similar plant. Verify the plant has a suitable rating and configuration for the lift.

Q: What's the difference between the Kerb Lifter and the Kerb Gripper?

The Kerb Lifter (this product, WLL 600kg) is a mechanical grab designed for machine-led placement of kerbs, steps, and pre-formed sections. The Kerb Gripper is a scissor-type manual tool (WLL 100kg) primarily for two-operator manual lifting of HB kerbs and slabs. The Lifter is the standard choice for heavy mechanical kerb laying; the Gripper is the standard choice for hand-laid kerb gang work with larger kerbs.

Q: Why are the rubber grips important?

The rubber grips serve two purposes: they protect kerb finishes from being marked or chipped during handling, and they provide a higher friction surface than bare steel for a more secure grip on the kerb under load. Replacing worn or damaged grips is part of routine maintenance.
