Yale VSIII Hand Chain Hoist

Model VSIII | Capacity 250 kg โ€“ 50,000 kg | 1 to 18 Chain Falls | Standard 3 m HOL | EN 13157 Compliant | German Engineered

The Yale VSIII is a medium-to-heavy duty hand chain hoist suitable for industrial lifting, fleeting, and outdoor applications across capacities from 250 kg up to 50 tonnes. The VSIII is an innovative further development of the long-established Yale VS and VS Plus ranges, with an improved hand chain guide that prevents canting and jamming of the hand chain for consistently smooth running. High quality bearings on the side plates, gearbox and load chain sheave deliver smooth operation of the load chain and drive pinion, while optimised hand forces set the standard for easy operation. The fully enclosed stamped steel housing protects all internal components and is rated for outdoor use; both top and bottom hooks rotate through 360ยฐ and are fitted with robust safety latches. Following years of refinement on the standard 250 kg โ€“ 5,000 kg range, Yale extended the VSIII series with heavy-duty capacities of 10 t, 20 t, 30 t and 50 t, serving the heaviest industrial applications including paper mills, shipyards and offshore.

Key Features

  • Improved hand chain guide: Prevents canting or jamming of the hand chain for consistently smooth chain travel.
  • Low overall height: Compact A-min headroom allows optimal use of available lifting height, particularly valuable in low-clearance applications.
  • Fully enclosed stamped steel housing: Protects all internal components and is rated for outdoor use in tough industrial environments.
  • 360ยฐ rotating hooks: Both top suspension and bottom load hooks rotate freely through a full 360ยฐ, allowing the hoist to be positioned at any load angle. Hooks are fitted with robust spring-loaded safety latches.
  • Drop-forged load hooks: Made from high tensile steel that yields under overload instead of breaking, providing visible warning before failure.
  • Zinc-plated load chain as standard: Grade T alloy chain with added zinc-plating for corrosion protection, suitable for indoor and outdoor applications.
  • High-quality bearings throughout: Side plates, gearbox and load chain sheave run on precision bearings for a long service life and reduced maintenance.
  • Reinforced housing cover and stay bolts: Strong bolts between side plates and housing cover, plus a reinforced hand wheel cover, ensure increased structural stability.
  • Precision-machined guide rollers: Ensure smooth, accurate running of the load chain through the sheave.
  • Heavy-duty range (10 t โ€“ 50 t): Series extension models feature protective covering over the chain inlet and top hook connection to prevent bruising and trapping injuries.
  • Suitable for fleeting: All VSIII models are suitable for fleeting (horizontal load pulling) applications.
  • HTG trolleys available: Compatible HTG geared travel trolleys are available for VSIII models from 10,000 kg upwards.

Suitable Applications

The Yale VSIII covers virtually every industrial manual lifting scenario, from light maintenance work to heavy plant installation. Standard 250 kg โ€“ 5,000 kg models suit general workshop, maintenance, mechanical handling, and warehouse use. The 10 t โ€“ 50 t heavy-duty range is engineered for serving heavy industries such as paper mills, shipbuilding, steel works, offshore, power generation, and large-scale plant maintenance. The hoist's outdoor-rated housing and zinc-plated chain make it suitable for marine, construction, and external industrial use. Where explosion protection is required, see our Yale VSIII ATEX range. Where extreme low temperatures are required (down to -40 ยฐC), see our Yale Arctic Edition range.

How to Use the Yale VSIII Hand Chain Hoist

  1. Mount the hoist securely: Suspend the hoist from a structure rated for the working load limit (WLL) plus an appropriate safety factor, never from a structure of unknown capacity. Engage the top hook safety latch fully.
  2. Inspect before each use: Visually check the load chain, hooks (safety latches operational, no bending or wear), housing, and hand chain. Do not use if any defect is found.
  3. Centre the load directly beneath the hoist: Side-pulling reduces capacity and damages the hoist. The load must hang vertically from the bottom hook.
  4. Engage the load: Attach the load to the bottom hook using suitable lifting accessories (chain slings, web slings, shackles). Ensure the safety latch closes fully and the load sits in the saddle of the hook.
  5. Lift by pulling the down-side hand chain: Pull steadily on the appropriate side of the hand chain to raise the load. The opposite side lowers. Refer to the hand chain pull values in the specifications table, the force at WLL ranges from 20 daN (250 kg) up to 53.6 daN (50 t).
  6. Multi-operator lifts: For VSIII 20/8, 30/12 and 50/18 (where hand chain pull exceeds typical single-operator force), two operators may be required on the hand chain. Coordinate movements clearly.
  7. Position the load precisely: The geared mechanism holds the load in any position when the hand chain is released, the Weston-style brake locks automatically.
  8. Lower the load: Pull the opposite side of the hand chain to lower at a controlled rate.

Warning: Yale hoists and trolleys are not designed for passenger elevation applications and must not be used for this purpose. Never exceed the rated Working Load Limit. Never use the hoist with damaged chain, hooks, or housing. Never use the hoist to lift loads over personnel.

Safety Information

  • Always inspect the hoist before each use, including load chain, hooks, safety latches, hand chain and housing.
  • Never exceed the Working Load Limit stamped on the hoist body.
  • Use only with hand chain pull applied, never use levers, mechanical pulling devices, or motor drives on the hand chain.
  • Never side-pull or angle-pull the load, only vertical lifting is permitted.
  • Keep hands clear of the load chain inlet and chain sheave at all times. Heavy-duty 10 t+ models include protective covering over these areas.
  • Do not stand under suspended loads.
  • Do not use the hoist as a tie-down or restraint device.
  • Ensure adequate headroom for the loaded hoist plus chain travel, see datasheet for A-min dimensions.
  • Remove from service immediately if chain elongation exceeds the discard criteria specified in the Operating Instructions.
  • This product must be inspected by a competent person at intervals not exceeding 12 months under LOLER 1998 (UK).

Inspection and Maintenance

The VSIII requires minimal routine maintenance under normal operating conditions. Lubricate the load chain regularly with a thin-film lubricant suitable for grade T alloy chain. The Weston-style brake mechanism is sealed and requires no field lubrication, disassembly should only be carried out by a competent person. Load chain must be measured against discard criteria during periodic inspections; elongation over 11 chain pitches exceeding 2% indicates the chain has reached the end of its safe service life and must be replaced. All hooks must be measured for opening (Dimension C) and minimum thickness (Dimensions B, N, W, V) against the wear limits in the Operating Manual. WOLFF Onsite can supply LOLER-certified inspection, spare parts, and full overhaul services for all VSIII capacities, contact our hire and service team for details.

Optional Accessories

  • Overload prevention device: Available factory-fitted on VSIII models from 500 kg upwards.
  • Chain container: Yale HCH metal chain container or fabric chain bag, keeps the loose end of the load chain contained during lifting. Sized to match each VSIII capacity.
  • Extended Height of Lift (HOL): Standard 3 m HOL can be specified to greater lengths on request.
  • HTG geared trolley: For VSIII 10 t and above, integrated geared travel trolleys are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's the difference between VSIII 2,0/1 and VSIII 2,0/2?

Both have the same 2,000 kg Working Load Limit, but the 2,0/1 uses a single chain fall with 8 ร— 24 mm chain, while the 2,0/2 uses a double fall with thinner 6 ร— 18 mm chain. The double-fall model has lower headroom and lighter chain handling, but is slightly slower per metre lift (15 mm/m versus 19 mm/m hand chain travel). Choose based on whether you prioritise lift speed (single fall) or compact headroom and lighter chain (double fall).

Q: Can the VSIII be used in explosive atmospheres?

No, the standard VSIII is not ATEX certified. For Zone 1 and Zone 21 explosive atmospheres, please specify the Yale Yalelift 360 ATEX hand chain hoist, which features spark-resistant coatings, copper-coated hooks (Medium design), and stainless steel load chains (High design) compliant with EU Directive 2014/34/EU.

Q: What temperature range is the VSIII certified for?

Yale standard hoist products including the VSIII are certified for operating ambient temperatures from -20 ยฐC to +50 ยฐC, this exceeds the EN 13157 minimum requirement of -10 ยฐC to +50 ยฐC. For applications below -20 ยฐC and down to -40 ยฐC (e.g. cold storage, Arctic operations), Yale offers the Yalelift 360 Arctic Edition range with low-temperature certified materials and lubricants.

Q: How often does the VSIII need to be inspected?

Under LOLER 1998 (UK), hand chain hoists must be thoroughly examined by a competent person at intervals not exceeding 12 months. Visual pre-use inspections by the operator should also be carried out before each use, checking the chain, hooks, safety latches, and housing for damage or wear. WOLFF Onsite provides LOLER inspection services across our hire fleet and customer-owned equipment.

Q: Can I get a different Height of Lift?

Yes. The VSIII is supplied with a 3 m HOL as standard, but extended chain lengths are available on request. Total hoist weight will increase proportionally with the additional chain, for example, a 6 m HOL doubles the chain mass shown in the specifications table. Contact our team with your HOL requirement before ordering.

Q: What's "suitable for fleeting" mean?

Fleeting refers to using the hoist for controlled horizontal pulling or tensioning of a load, not just vertical lifting. The VSIII's robust construction and 360ยฐ rotating hooks allow it to be safely used for fleeting applications, such as pulling a load across a floor or tensioning equipment on a structure. Always ensure the load remains within the rated WLL and the hoist is not subjected to side-loading at the suspension point.

Q: Why does the VSIII 50/18 weigh 540 kg?

The 50-tonne capacity VSIII 50/18 uses 18 chain falls of 10 ร— 30 mm grade T load chain to lift 50,000 kg with manageable hand chain force (53.6 daN at WLL). The 540 kg weight at 3 m HOL is largely accounted for by the substantial load chain mass, 18 falls of heavy alloy chain, plus the reinforced housing, gearbox, and hook blocks engineered for sustained heavy-duty service. This is a serious industrial tool; appropriate mechanical handling will be required for installation and storage.
