Yale YL ITG ATEX Hand Chain Hoist with Integrated Geared Trolley

Model YL ITG ATEX | Capacity 500 kg to 20,000 kg | ATEX II 2 GD C IIC T4 | Zone 1 / Zone 21 | Hand-Geared Travel | Spark-Resistant Bronze Wheels

The Yale YL ITG ATEX is the explosion-protected variant of the YL ITG geared-travel trolley, certified for use in Zone 1 (gas) and Zone 21 (dust) atmospheres under EU Directive 2014/34/EU. Built on the proven YL ITG chassis, the ATEX version adds solid bronze trolley wheels, copper-coated suspension and load hooks (MEDIUM design), and the MKS micro corrosion protection system. The hand-geared mechanism holds the trolley in position when the hand chain is released, giving precise positioning control without the risk of trolley creep, an important safety feature in hazardous environments where unintended movement is unacceptable. The integrated hoist is the Yalelift 360 ATEX with its patented 360ยฐ rotating hand chain guide. The YL ITG ATEX covers capacities from 500 kg up to 20,000 kg, with Size A standard for lower capacities and Size B (180 to 310 mm beam flange) used at 5,000 kg and above.

  • Solid bronze trolley wheels (MEDIUM and HIGH design): Non-sparking bronze wheel construction for safe operation in explosive atmospheres.
  • Stainless steel load chain (HIGH design): Optional upgrade for the most aggressive ATEX environments. HIGH design models supplied with reduced capacities.
  • Rubber buffers as standard: ATEX trolleys include rubber buffers to control end-of-beam contact without spark generation.
  • Compliant with EU Directives 2014/34/EU and 99/92/EC: Full ATEX compliance for European explosive atmosphere applications.
  • Hand-chain geared travel: Precise, controlled trolley positioning along the beam, holds position when hand chain is released, eliminates creep risk in hazardous areas.
  • Heavy capacity range up to 20,000 kg: Inherited from the standard YL ITG, with full ATEX certification across the range.
  • Patented 360ยฐ rotating hand chain guide: Operator can apply force from any angle, keeping clear of the load path.
  • Easily converted to YL LHG ATEX (low headroom geared): Field upgrade available for applications requiring even smaller closed headroom.

Suitable Applications

The Yalelift YL ITG ATEX is designed for the most demanding industrial applications in explosive atmospheres, where precise load positioning, hold-in-place capability, and explosion protection are all required. Typical environments include: offshore oil and gas platforms; refineries; chemical processing plants; pharmaceutical manufacturing; large-scale paint and coating facilities; biogas and waste treatment plants; and heavy industrial paint shops. The geared variant is preferred over the push variant for heavier loads and any application where the load may be left unattended on the beam.

How to Use the Yale YL ITG ATEX Hand Chain Hoist with Integrated Geared Trolley

  1. Verify the ATEX zone classification: Confirm the trolley's ATEX marking matches the zone, gas group, and temperature class of the work area.
  2. Verify beam compatibility: Confirm beam flange width, thickness, and curve radius are within the trolley's rated range. Note higher capacities require Size B (125 to 310 mm beam flange).
  3. Adjust the trolley side plates: Adjust to match beam flange using adjusting nuts.
  4. Fit the trolley to the beam: Open, position over the beam, close and tighten adjusting nuts to specified torque.
  5. Verify all ATEX safety devices: Anti-drop bolts, anti-tilt devices, rubber buffers, and gear engagement must all be operational. Check coating integrity (MKS, copper hooks, bronze wheels).
  6. Engage the load: Use ATEX-rated lifting accessories. Lift using the hoist hand chain.
  7. Traverse using the trolley hand chain: Pull the trolley hand chain to drive the trolley along the beam in controlled increments.
  8. Position precisely: The gear mechanism holds position when the hand chain is released, no creep risk.
  9. Two-operator operation for 20-tonne: The YL ITG ATEX 20,000 kg requires two operators on the hoist hand chain at WLL.

Warning: Yale hoists and trolleys are not designed for passenger elevation applications and must not be used for this purpose. Never use the trolley in zones, gas groups, or temperature classes exceeding the ATEX marking. Never modify or recoat any component without manufacturer approval.

Safety Information

  • Verify beam flange width and thickness are within the trolley's rated range before each use.
  • Verify the supporting beam structure is rated for the combined hoist plus full WLL load.
  • Confirm anti-drop bolts and anti-tilt devices are present and operational before lifting.
  • Never exceed the Working Load Limit stamped on the hoist body.
  • Beam end stops must be fitted at both ends of the travel range to prevent trolley runoff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why choose the geared YL ITG ATEX over the push YL ITP ATEX?

Choose the ITG ATEX (geared) for ATEX applications when: (1) precise positioning matters; (2) the beam is sloping; (3) the load may need to be left unattended; or (4) the load exceeds 2,000 kg (the maximum for ITP ATEX). The geared mechanism holds the trolley in position when released, eliminating creep risk, which is particularly important in hazardous environments where unintended movement could trigger an incident.

Q: How does the gear mechanism stay ATEX-compliant?

The geared mechanism is fully enclosed and uses ATEX-compliant lubricants. The trolley hand chain runs over a copper-coated chain wheel (MEDIUM design and higher). All metal-on-metal contact points are designed to prevent spark generation through material selection (bronze wheels) and coating (copper hooks, MKS housing).

Q: Why is the 20,000 kg minimum curve radius 5.0 m for ATEX vs 9.5 m for standard?

This reflects the slightly different trolley geometry and bronze wheel configuration in the ATEX variant. Verify your beam curve radii against the rated minimum before ordering.

Q: Does the geared mechanism really eliminate creep on sloping beams?

Yes, this is the primary safety advantage of the geared variant. The drive gearing is self-locking, so the trolley cannot creep down a sloping beam under load. The push variant (ITP) does not have this feature and is not recommended for sloping beams, particularly in ATEX zones where unexpected movement is hazardous.

Q: Can I retrofit my standard YL ITG to ATEX?

No, ATEX certification is given at manufacture and cannot be retrofitted. The ATEX variant uses specific materials (bronze wheels, copper hooks) and coatings (MKS) that must be applied during manufacture as part of the ATEX certification process.

Q: How often does it need ATEX inspection?

LOLER 1998 (UK) requires thorough examination every 12 months. ATEX-specific inspection additionally checks coating integrity, hook plating, bronze wheel condition, and rubber buffer condition. WOLFF Onsite provides full ATEX-compliant inspection services.
