ATEX & Specialist Ranges

What ATEX means

ATEX covers equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres — places where flammable gas, vapour or dust may be present. In those areas equipment must be certified for the zone it is used in, and standard equipment is not permitted regardless of how well it is maintained.

Zones

Areas are classified by how likely an explosive atmosphere is and whether it comes from gas or dust. The zone determines the equipment category you need, so establish the classification for the area before selecting anything.

Sparking and static

ATEX-rated height safety and lifting equipment typically uses non-sparking materials and controls static build-up. That changes the specification of everyday items — karabiners, tools, harness hardware — so a standard product cannot simply be substituted.

Common questions
What is ATEX equipment?

Equipment certified for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, where flammable gas, vapour or dust may be present. Standard equipment is not permitted in those areas.

How do I know which ATEX category I need?

From the zone classification for the area, which reflects how likely an explosive atmosphere is and whether it is gas or dust. Establish the classification before selecting equipment.

Can I use standard equipment in an ATEX area if it is well maintained?

No. Certification is a requirement of the area classification, not a function of condition. Only certified equipment for that zone may be used.

Which brands do you stock for ATEX & Specialist Ranges?

We supply Kratos. Ranges vary, so check the brand page for the full listing.
