Chain & Fittings

Choosing a grade

Lifting chain comes in several grades, and the grade determines how much load a given chain size will carry. A higher grade generally means you can use a smaller, lighter chain for the same job, which is easier to handle all day. Your supplier will confirm the rating for the size you need.

Keep the assembly matched

Chain, master links, connectors and hooks are designed to work together as a system. Mixing grades or manufacturers means the assembly can only be rated to its weakest component, and it may not be possible to certify at all. If you are replacing a single part, replace it with the same part.

Inspection

Chain is a wear item. Check it before use for stretch, nicks, gouges, corrosion and heat damage, and have it examined periodically by a competent person. Manufacturers publish discard criteria for their own products — follow those rather than a general rule.

Common questions
What do the different chain grades mean?

Grade indicates the strength rating of the chain. A higher grade carries more load for the same diameter, which often lets you drop a size and reduce weight. Check the manufacturer's rating tables for the specific product.

Can I mix components from different chain grades?

It is not advisable. An assembly can only be rated to its lowest-rated component, and mixing grades or manufacturers may make certification impossible. Keep the whole assembly to one system.

How often should lifting chain be inspected?

A visual check before every use, plus periodic thorough examination by a competent person. Your inspection intervals should follow current regulations and the manufacturer's guidance for the product and its duty.

When should chain be taken out of service?

If it shows stretch, nicks, gouges, cracks, heat damage or corrosion, or if the markings are illegible. Chain should not be repaired — replace the assembly.
