Buying guide

Match the grab to the drum

Drum handling equipment is designed around a drum type — steel with a rolling hoop, plastic with a moulded rim, or fibre. A grab designed for a steel drum rim will not hold a plastic drum safely, and the failure mode is the drum dropping.

Lifting, tipping or moving

Decide what the job actually is. Moving a drum across a floor needs a trolley; lifting one to height needs a rated grab and a lifting appliance; decanting needs a tipper or cradle. Equipment for one rarely does the others well.

Full or empty

A full drum behaves very differently to an empty one, and liquid contents shift during a lift. Specify against the heaviest condition the drum will be handled in.

Common questions

Will a drum grab work on plastic drums?

Only if it is designed for them. Steel drum grabs work on the rolling hoop, which plastic drums do not have.

Can I lift a drum with a standard sling?

Not safely. Drums need equipment that positively grips or supports them, because a sling can slide off as the load shifts.
