Buying guide

Capacity falls as the jib extends

Workshop cranes are rated at several jib positions, and the capacity at full extension is a fraction of the capacity retracted. Specify against the reach you actually need, not the headline figure.

Floor and access

These are wheeled units and need a flat, sound floor to be moved under load. Check door widths and any thresholds on the route, and whether the legs will pass either side of what you are lifting over.

Folding versus fixed

Folding cranes store in a fraction of the space, which matters in a busy workshop. Fixed frames are more rigid and quicker to bring into use.

Common questions

Why is the capacity different at different positions?

The jib acts as a lever. Extending it increases the overturning moment, so the safe load falls. Every position is marked on the crane.

Can it be moved with the load raised?

Only short distances on a level floor, with the load as low as practical. Check the manufacturer's instructions before doing so.
