Sheffield Racks

Why the Sheffield design

A Sheffield stand supports the bicycle frame at two points, so the bike stands up on its own and both frame and wheel can be locked to it. That combination is why it remains the recommended pattern in most cycle parking guidance.

Fixing options

Stands are available for bolting down, for setting into concrete, and as free-standing units on a base rail for surfaces that cannot be drilled. Root-fixed stands are the most secure; bolt-down suits finished surfaces.

Layout

Allow enough space between stands for two bikes per stand to be locked and removed comfortably, and leave clear access along the row. Cramming stands together reduces effective capacity because the outer positions become unusable.

Common questions
What is a Sheffield stand?

A simple inverted-U stand that supports the bike frame at two points, allowing both frame and wheel to be locked and letting the bike stand unaided.

How should stands be fixed?

Bolt-down for finished surfaces, root-fixed into concrete for maximum security, or free-standing on a base rail where drilling is not possible.

How much space do stands need?

Enough for two bikes per stand to be locked and removed comfortably, plus clear access along the row. Spacing them too closely reduces usable capacity.
