Buying guide

Fixed or swivel

A fixed eyebolt is intended for load in one direction and loses capacity when pulled at an angle. A swivel hoist ring rotates and pivots to stay aligned with the sling leg, which is why it suits anything lifted repeatedly or from varying positions.

Thread engagement

The fixing must be fully seated with the flange flush against the surface. Insufficient thread engagement is a common cause of failure, and the required depth varies with the parent material — check the manufacturer's guidance for steel, aluminium or cast iron.

Angle

Rated capacity assumes the loading direction stated by the manufacturer. Angled loading reduces it, sometimes considerably. Where the sling angle will vary, swivel hoist rings remove the question.

Common questions

What is the difference between an eyebolt and a swivel hoist ring?

An eyebolt is fixed and rated for load in one plane. A swivel hoist ring rotates and pivots to stay aligned with the sling at any angle.

How much thread engagement is needed?

It depends on the parent material and the product. Check the manufacturer's guidance — softer materials need more. The flange must sit flush against the surface.

Can an eyebolt be loaded at an angle?

Only within the manufacturer's stated reduction, and the loss can be substantial. Where the angle varies, use a swivel hoist ring.
