Connectors

Gate types

A screwgate karabiner is closed manually and suits connections made once and left. Twistlock and triple-action types close automatically, which is preferable wherever the connector is clipped and unclipped repeatedly — the common failure with screwgates is simply forgetting to close them.

Loading direction

A karabiner is strongest along its spine. Loading across the gate reduces strength considerably, so check the connector is seated correctly before use. Where rotation is likely, a captive-eye type keeps it aligned.

Compatibility

Make sure the connector suits the anchor it attaches to. One that cannot close fully around a wide anchor eye, or that can rotate into a poor loading position, is not a sound connection regardless of its rating.

Common questions
What is the difference between twistlock and triple action?

Twistlock requires two deliberate actions to open, triple action requires three. Both close automatically. Triple action gives more protection against accidental opening.

What is cross-loading?

Loading a karabiner across the gate rather than along the spine, which significantly reduces its strength. A captive-eye connector helps where rotation is possible.

Can I use climbing karabiners for work at height?

Only if the product is certified as personal protective equipment for the intended use and is covered by your risk assessment. Recreational equipment is not automatically suitable for work.
