Hydraulics

Capacity, stroke and closed height

Choose on capacity first, then check the stroke and the closed height. A jack that can lift the load but will not fit underneath it is no use, and closed height is the dimension most often overlooked on low-clearance work.

Toe jacks

A toe jack lifts from ground level using a lip at the base, which is what you need where there is no clearance for a conventional jack. The toe rating is normally lower than the head rating, so check both figures.

Support the load

A hydraulic jack lifts a load; it is not intended to hold it. Once raised, transfer the load onto stands or blocking before anyone works near or underneath it.

Common questions
What is a toe jack for?

Lifting from ground level where there is no clearance for a conventional jack. The lip at the base slides under the load. Toe and head ratings usually differ.

Can I leave a load supported on a jack?

No. Transfer it onto stands or blocking before anyone works underneath. Jacks lift, they do not hold.

What is closed height?

The height of the jack fully retracted. If it exceeds the clearance under the load, the jack cannot be used regardless of capacity.

What types of Hydraulics are available?
