Stainless Steel

When stainless is worth it

Stainless lifting equipment costs considerably more than painted or galvanised steel, so it is specified where the environment demands it — food production, pharmaceutical, marine, water treatment and chemical handling. In those settings the alternative is frequent replacement and contamination risk.

Grades

Grade 304 suits most indoor food and pharmaceutical work. Grade 316 contains molybdenum and resists chlorides far better, which makes it the choice for marine, coastal and heavy washdown environments. Check which grade a product is before assuming it will cope.

Capacity

Stainless components are generally rated lower than the carbon steel equivalent of the same size, so do not assume a like-for-like swap keeps the same capacity. Work from the marked rating on the stainless item.

Common questions
When should I choose stainless lifting equipment?

Where corrosion, washdown or contamination matter — food production, pharmaceutical, marine, water treatment and chemical handling.

What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless?

316 contains molybdenum and resists chlorides much better, making it suitable for marine, coastal and heavy washdown use. 304 suits most indoor food and pharmaceutical applications.

Does stainless have the same capacity as carbon steel?

Usually not. Stainless components are often rated lower than the carbon steel equivalent of the same size, so always work from the marked rating.
