Barriers

Separating people and vehicles

Physical separation is the most reliable control for vehicle and pedestrian conflict. Barriers define walkways, protect racking legs and machinery, and keep vehicles away from people — and they work without anyone having to pay attention.

Steel or polymer

Steel is strong and economical but deforms permanently on impact and transfers force into the fixing and floor. Polymer barriers flex and recover, absorbing impact rather than passing it on, which suits areas where strikes are frequent. Polymer also avoids rust and repainting.

Self-closing gates

A gate propped open is not a barrier. Self-closing gates return under their own weight or a spring, which is why they are used at walkway openings and at the head of stairs and ladders.

Common questions
Steel or polymer barriers?

Steel is stronger and cheaper but deforms on impact and transfers force to the fixing. Polymer flexes and recovers, which suits frequent impacts and avoids repainting.

Where are self-closing gates used?

At walkway openings and at the top of ladders, stairs and platforms, where a gate left open would leave an unprotected edge.

Do barriers need bolting down?

Impact protection barriers do — the fixing carries the load. Follow the manufacturer's fixing specification for your floor type.
