Trolleys & Trolley Clamps

The part of the assembly that gets forgotten

A certified hoist hung from an uncertified trolley is not a certified assembly. The trolley runs steel wheels along a steel flange, under load, for the full length of every traverse, which is precisely the sort of continuous friction contact the classification is meant to eliminate. Beam clamps present the same issue at the point of contact with the flange, plus impact when they are being fitted.

Explosion protected versions use non-sparking materials at the wheel and flange contact surfaces and at impact points, so the whole suspension arrangement can be introduced into the zone.

Setting up on the beam

The usual rules still apply. Flange width must sit within the adjustment range of the trolley or clamp rather than merely close to it, and flange thickness and profile matter, with tapered sections needing either a suitable design or the correct spacers. Too wide and the trolley can derail; too tight and it binds and loads the flange edge.

Push trolleys suit short traverses and lighter loads, geared trolleys give control on long runs and heavier loads. Whichever you choose, confirm the beam itself is capable of the imposed load at the position it will be used.

Rating and examination

Match the equipment category, gas group and temperature class to the zone, and to the hoist it will carry. Trolleys and clamps are lifting accessories under LOLER, requiring thorough examination by a competent person at least every six months.
