More About This Product

The Acid & Alkali Security Cupboard 1800 x 1200 x 460mm provides secure, segregated storage for corrosive and hazardous substances, helping employers meet their obligations under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH). This 1800mm high floor-standing unit is fabricated from 1.2mm seam-welded mild steel with an integral, fully welded liquid-tight sump rated to 18 litres to contain leaks and spills. It is fitted with 3 adjustable galvanised spill-retaining shelves rated to a 140kg uniformly distributed load, behind twin lockable doors secured by a seven-lever anti-pick safe lock. Delivered fully assembled and supplied with corrosive hazard warning labels, the carcass and doors are powder-coated in full gloss white with an integral antibacterial compound and classified for Reaction to Fire under EN 13501-1.

Suitable Applications

Where a seven-lever safe lock is not required, the standard Acid & Alkali cupboard range offers the same sump capacities at lower cost. For other substance types see the flammable liquid, pesticide and agrochemical and petroleum cupboard ranges.

This cupboard is suited to laboratories, schools and colleges, hospitals, water treatment works, manufacturing plants, vehicle workshops and cleaning stores. It is suitable anywhere corrosive acids, alkalis or other hazardous liquids need to be stored safely and securely. The segregated, lockable, clearly labelled design supports the control measures expected under a COSHH risk assessment and keeps incompatible or dangerous substances away from unauthorised access.

How to Use the Acid & Alkali Security Cupboard

  1. Site the cupboard on a firm, level floor in a well-ventilated area, away from heat sources, ignition sources and incompatible materials.
  2. Adjust the galvanised shelves to suit the height of your containers, ensuring each shelf is fully seated on its supports.
  3. Store substances in their original, correctly labelled containers and never exceed the 140kg uniformly distributed load per shelf.
  4. Keep acids and alkalis, and any other incompatible substances, segregated in separate cupboards as identified by your COSHH risk assessment.
  5. Affix the supplied corrosive hazard warning labels to the door so the contents are clearly identifiable.
  6. Lock the cupboard after every use and restrict key access to authorised, trained personnel only.

Warning:
Always consult the safety data sheet (SDS) for every substance before storage. Never store incompatible chemicals together. Acids and alkalis must be kept in separate cupboards. Do not store quantities or substances beyond the scope of your COSHH risk assessment.

Safety Information

  • Carry out a COSHH risk assessment before storing any hazardous substance and follow the control measures it identifies.
  • Store acids, alkalis and other incompatible substances in separate, clearly labelled cupboards.
  • Keep all substances in their original, correctly labelled containers with the lids secure.
  • Ensure the storage area is adequately ventilated and away from heat and ignition sources.
  • Provide and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling stored substances.
  • Keep the cupboard locked when not in use and limit key access to trained, authorised personnel.

Inspection and Maintenance

Clean the paintwork periodically with warm soapy water or a foaming cleaner. Oil the hinges and lock sparingly as required with a light oil (3-in-1 or similar). Inspect the integral sump regularly and clean out any spillage promptly, checking that the welded seams remain sound. Check that hazard warning labels remain legible and replace them if they become damaged. Replacement locks and spare keys are available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does this cupboard meet COSHH requirements?

Hazardous substance cupboards of this type are designed to help employers comply with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 by providing lockable, clearly identifiable, segregated storage. COSHH does not specify a particular size, design or material, so the cupboard forms part of the wider control measures identified in your own COSHH risk assessment.

Q: Can I store acids and alkalis in the same cupboard?

No. Acids and alkalis are incompatible and should always be stored in separate cupboards. We recommend a dedicated cupboard for each, with the contents clearly identified using the supplied hazard warning labels.

Q: Is the cupboard delivered assembled?

Yes. The unit is manufactured to order and delivered as a fully assembled, ready-to-use cupboard complete with corrosive hazard warning labels.

Q: Are spare keys and replacement locks available?

Yes. Replacement locks and spare keys are available on request, so the cupboard can be re-keyed or restored if keys are lost.
