The LITTLE MULE® LMG cable grip is a device for gripping, pulling and tensioning uncoated wire ropes, cables and metal rods up to 1770 N/mm² tensile strength (1960 N/mm² with the LMG II-X grooved jaws variant), with pulling force ratings from 2000 to 5000 daN covering common cable installation and tensioning tasks. The parallel jaw design provides a firm, non-slip grip without damaging the rope, while a spring-loaded guide prevents the grip dropping off and allows instant release without jamming. Note: the LMG is a gripping device for pulling — it is not a lifting device.

Key Features

  • 2000–5000 daN pull force — Three core ratings plus the LMG II-X high-tensile variant.
  • Parallel jaw grip — Firm non-slip engagement that distributes force evenly to protect the cable surface.
  • Spring-loaded guide — Prevents the grip from dropping off the rope and allows instant clean release.
  • Smooth or grooved jaws — Standard LMG for ropes to 1770 N/mm²; LMG II-X grooved jaws for ropes to 1960 N/mm².
  • Wide application range — Suitable for uncoated wire rope, cable and round metal rod.
  • Robust forged construction — Long service life under repeated tensioning cycles.
  • Tool-free attachment — Spring action releases the jaws for fast attachment to the cable.
  • Used with wire rope pullers — Pairs with the Yaletrac and similar wire rope pullers for cable installation tasks.

Technical Specifications

Item # Description Pull Force (daN)
N02606516 LMG I 2000
N02606517 LMG II 3000
N02608043 LMG II-X (Grooved Jaws) 3000
N02607609 LMG III 5000

Rated in daN pull force, NOT kg lifting capacity. The LMG is designed for gripping cables under tension during pulling and stringing operations — not as a lifting attachment. The LMG II-X variant is supplied with grooved jaws specifically for higher-tensile-strength wire ropes (up to 1960 N/mm²).

CE Marked | Parallel Jaw Design | Spring-Loaded Guide

Supplied with a test certificate and EC Declaration of Conformity. CE marked to relevant EN standards for lifting accessories. LOLER 1998 thorough examinations required every 6 months by a competent person after initial certification. Design factor 4:1 unless otherwise specified.

More About This Product

The LITTLE MULE® LMG cable grip is a device for gripping, pulling and tensioning uncoated wire ropes, cables and metal rods up to 1770 N/mm² tensile strength (1960 N/mm² with the LMG II-X grooved jaws variant). Pulling force ratings from 2000 to 5000 daN cover common cable installation and tensioning tasks. The parallel jaw design provides a firm, non-slip grip without damaging the wire rope, while a spring-loaded guide prevents the grip from dropping off the rope and allows instant release without jamming. Note: The LMG is a gripping device for pulling — it is not a lifting device.

Suitable Applications

Overhead power line installation, telecoms cable stringing, suspension bridge cable tensioning, wire rope drag-in operations, conductor pulling, structural cable installation, and any cable or rope pulling operation requiring a temporary high-force grip.

How to Use the LMG Cable Grip

  1. Inspect the LMG before every use — body, jaws, spring, pivot points and identification marks.
  2. Confirm cable diameter and tensile strength are within the rated range for the selected LMG model.
  3. Operate the spring-loaded guide to open the jaws.
  4. Position the LMG on the cable at the desired grip point.
  5. Release the spring guide to engage the parallel jaws.
  6. Connect the LMG attachment eye to the wire rope puller or rigging assembly.
  7. Apply tension — the jaws self-tighten under load to grip the cable.
  8. After use, release tension before opening the jaws to remove from the cable.

Warning:
The LMG is a CABLE GRIP for pulling — it is NOT a lifting device and must not be used to suspend loads overhead. Confirm cable tensile strength is within the rated range — use LMG II-X for high-tensile ropes up to 1960 N/mm². Never exceed the rated pull force. Inspect jaws for wear or damage before every use; worn jaws can slip under load.

Safety Information

  • Never exceed the rated working load limit (WLL) displayed on the equipment.
  • Never use the equipment if any component shows visible damage, wear or deformation.
  • Keep all personnel clear of the lifted load at all times.
  • Do not modify, repair or substitute components other than as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Ensure the operator is trained, competent and authorised for the lifting operation.
  • Do not shock load the equipment under any circumstances.

Inspection and Maintenance

Inspect before each use — focus on all load-bearing components, welds, hooks, safety latches, chain, rope and pendant controls. Thorough examination under LOLER 1998 is required at intervals not exceeding 6 months by a competent person. Replacement parts must be genuine manufacturer items to maintain certification. Records of all inspections must be retained for the life of the equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the LMG a lifting device?

No — the LMG is a cable grip for pulling and tensioning operations only. It must not be used to lift or suspend loads overhead. For lifting wire rope, use a purpose-designed wire rope clamp or rigging assembly rated for lifting.

Q: What does the X in LMG II-X mean?

The LMG II-X variant has GROOVED jaws specifically designed for higher-tensile-strength wire ropes — up to 1960 N/mm² versus 1770 N/mm² for the standard smooth-jaw LMG models. Choose II-X when working with hard-drawn or high-tensile cables.

Q: What sizes of rope does each LMG accept?

Each LMG model has a specific rope diameter range and tensile strength rating. Refer to the Yale datasheet for the exact rope diameter window per model. Using rope outside the rated range risks slippage.

Q: Can the LMG damage the cable?

Used within its rated range, the LMG's parallel jaw design distributes force to minimise marking. However, for very soft cables or coated wire rope (these are uncoated rope grips), consider a purpose-designed cable grip with shaped or padded jaws.
