How to Use the ASHS Weld-On Hook
- Inspect the hook before welding. Check the body, hook opening, safety latch and return spring for damage. Do not use if defects are found.
- Select a suitable mounting position on the host structure. The host material must be of weldable quality and rated to carry the load applied through the hook.
- Weld the hook to the host structure in accordance with the hook manufacturer's instructions and applicable welding standards. No pre-warming is required for the ASHS weld-on hook itself, but consider the host material's requirements.
- Inspect the completed weld for full penetration, absence of cracks, and correct fillet size. The weld must be capable of carrying the rated WLL.
- Have a competent person proof-load test the welded hook before placing it into service, as required by the design of the lifting equipment it forms part of.
- In use, ensure the load is attached via a suitable sling, shackle or attachment with the safety latch fully closed.
- Do not exceed the rated WLL. Do not side-load or point-load the hook outside its designed direction of pull.
- Inspect periodically for cracks at the weld, hook deformation, safety latch wear, and corrosion damage.
Important:
Welding of lifting equipment must be carried out by a qualified welder in accordance with applicable welding procedures. The completed weld and hook installation must be proof-load tested and certified by a competent person before being placed into service, in accordance with LOLER 1998.
Inspection and Maintenance
Inspect before every use, including checking the hook body for elongation or deformation, the safety latch for damage or weak return spring, the weld for cracks (particularly at the toe of the weld), and the surface coating for damage or corrosion. Arrange thorough examination by a qualified engineer at least every 6 months when in regular use, in accordance with LOLER 1998. Replace the safety latch assembly when wear is noted; replacement latches are available from Yale.
