Round Slings vs Duplex Webbing Slings

1. Construction - round slings use a continuous loop of polyester yarn cores inside a protective tubular sleeve. Duplex slings are two flat layers of woven webbing stitched together. The round sling's tubular construction allows it to flex in any direction.
2. Flexibility - round slings conform to irregular load shapes more easily than flat webbing. They naturally form around cylindrical, curved, and oddly shaped objects, making them ideal for pipes, drums, and rounded components.
3. Choke performance - round slings form a tighter, more secure choke hitch than flat slings because the tubular construction grips the load more evenly. This is particularly important for cylindrical loads that could slip.
4. Durability - the outer sleeve protects the load-bearing core from abrasion and UV damage. If the sleeve is damaged, the core may still be intact (inspect immediately). With duplex slings, damage to the outer layer directly affects the load-bearing webbing.
5. Weight - round slings are generally lighter than duplex slings of equivalent capacity, making them easier to handle and rig, particularly at height.
6. When to use duplex instead - duplex slings provide a wider, flatter bearing surface which is better for flat-sided loads like steel beams, panels, and palletised materials. Duplex slings are also easier to inspect visually because the load-bearing webbing is visible.

Safety Information

• Never exceed the rated Working Load Limit (WLL) for the selected hitch configuration. A choke hitch reduces the WLL to 800 kg.
• Inspect the sling before every use. Check the outer sleeve for cuts, tears, abrasion, and holes. If the inner core yarns are exposed, remove from service immediately.
• Do not use round slings on sharp-edged loads without protective wear sleeves - sharp edges can cut through the outer sleeve and damage the core.
• Do not knot or twist the sling to shorten it. Knotting damages the core yarns and dramatically reduces the WLL.
• Position the choke point at the natural 120° angle. Forcing a tighter choke generates friction that can damage the sleeve and reduce capacity.
• Do not expose polyester round slings to strong alkalis, concentrated acids, or temperatures above 100°C.
• Never stand under a suspended load. Maintain exclusion zones during all lifting operations.
• A risk assessment must be in place before any lifting operation. Operation only by competent persons trained in sling use and rigging techniques.

Inspection and Maintenance

Round slings must be visually inspected before each use and undergo a thorough examination at least every six months by a competent person under LOLER 1998. Inspection must cover the full circumference of the outer sleeve on all sides, paying particular attention to bearing points where the sling contacts the load. Key indicators of damage include: cuts, tears, or holes in the outer sleeve; exposed core yarns; lumps, hard spots, or unevenness in the core; abrasion wear or thinning of the sleeve; discolouration from chemical or heat exposure; and damage to or illegibility of the identification label. Any round sling showing signs of damage must be removed from service immediately. Round slings cannot be field-repaired - damaged slings must be cut and disposed of to prevent re-use.
