8 Tonne Duplex Webbing Sling

Plumalti | 8,000 kg WLL | 240mm Width | Blue | BS EN 1492-1 | CE Marked | UKCA Compliant

The Plumalti 8 Tonne Duplex Webbing Sling is a heavy-duty flat lifting sling manufactured from 100% high-tenacity polyester to BS EN 1492-1:2000. The 240mm wide blue-coded sling provides a Working Load Limit of 8,000 kg in a straight lift โ€” rising to 16,000 kg in a basket hitch configuration. The dual-layer (duplex) construction delivers outstanding strength, durability, and abrasion resistance for demanding commercial and industrial lifting operations. The soft polyester material protects finished surfaces, painted goods, and delicate loads from scratching or damage during handling. Blue colour-coded for instant WLL identification in accordance with the international colour standard. Each sling is fitted with a blue traceability label displaying the serial number, WLL, length, and mode factors for straight lift, choke, and basket configurations. Available in lengths from 2m to 8m.

CE Marked, UKCA Compliant & BS EN 1492-1 Certified

This product is CE marked in accordance with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EEC and is UKCA compliant for the Great Britain market. Manufactured to the performance requirements of BS EN 1492-1:2000 with a 7:1 safety factor โ€” the minimum breaking strength is seven times the stated Working Load Limit. Each sling is individually serialised and supplied with full traceability documentation. Following Brexit, the UK government has confirmed indefinite recognition of CE marking for lifting equipment in Great Britain, meaning businesses can use either UKCA or CE marked accessories provided the equipment is accompanied by a Declaration of Conformity (DoC).

Key Features

  • Manufactured to BS EN 1492-1:2000 โ€” produced from 100% high-tenacity polyester, tested and certified to the European harmonised standard for flat woven webbing slings
  • Duplex (two-layer) construction โ€” two layers of woven polyester stitched together provide superior strength, durability, and abrasion resistance for demanding lifting operations
  • Blue colour-coded for 8 Tonne WLL โ€” instant visual identification of Working Load Limit in accordance with the international colour standard
  • 240mm width โ€” distributes the lifting force over a wide bearing area, reducing localised pressure on both the sling and the load surface
  • 16,000 kg capacity in basket hitch โ€” in a basket configuration the effective WLL doubles, providing additional versatility for heavier loads
  • 56,000 kg minimum breaking strength โ€” the 7:1 safety factor provides an exceptional margin for site lifting operations
  • Soft, non-marking polyester โ€” won't scratch, dent, or damage loads during lifting, protecting painted surfaces, cladding, and finished goods
  • Blue traceability label โ€” individually serialised with WLL, length, mode factors, and manufacturer details for full LOLER inspection traceability
  • Low elongation (max 3%) โ€” predictable load behaviour under tension with minimal stretch for controlled positioning
  • Temperature range -40ยฐC to +100ยฐC โ€” suitable for all UK weather conditions and standard industrial environments

Heavy-Duty Lifting with Webbing Slings

  1. Edge protection is critical โ€” at 8 tonne loads, even slightly sharp edges can cut through webbing rapidly under tension. Always use heavy-duty corner protectors, wear pads, or Armourtex sleeves at every contact point with the load.
  2. Consider the 240mm width โ€” the 8 tonne sling is 240mm wide, which provides excellent load distribution but requires wider lifting points and more clearance around the load. Ensure the crane hook, shackle, or lifting beam can accommodate the full strap width without bunching.
  3. Dynamic load factors โ€” at 8 tonne capacity, dynamic forces from wind loading, sudden stops, or swinging become significant. A dynamic factor of 1.1 to 1.3 should be applied depending on conditions. A load weighing 7 tonnes with a 1.2 dynamic factor effectively loads each sling at 8,400 kg.
  4. Rigging team requirements โ€” lifts at this capacity typically require a qualified slinger/signaller and supervision by an Appointed Person. Ensure all personnel involved are competent and briefed on the lift plan before commencing.
  5. Headroom planning โ€” the 240mm width and heavier-duty eye construction mean the 8 tonne sling has a larger minimum bend radius. Allow additional headroom between the crane hook and the top of the load for proper sling seating.
  6. Tandem lifts โ€” if two cranes are required for the lift, each crane and sling set must be rated independently for the load share. Tandem lifts require a detailed lifting plan prepared by the Appointed Person.

Certification and Compliance

This product is CE marked in accordance with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EEC and is UKCA compliant for the Great Britain market. Manufactured to the performance requirements of BS EN 1492-1:2000 โ€” the European harmonised standard for flat woven webbing slings used in general purpose lifting operations. Each sling is produced with a 7:1 safety factor, individually serialised, and supplied with full traceability documentation including WLL, length, mode factors, and manufacturer identification. All lifting equipment used on UK construction sites must comply with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).

Safety Information

  • Never exceed the rated Working Load Limit (WLL) for the selected hitch configuration. A choke hitch reduces the WLL to 6,400 kg.
  • Inspect the sling before every use. Remove from service immediately if cuts, fraying, abrasion, heat damage, chemical contamination, or illegible labelling is found.
  • Do not use webbing slings on sharp-edged loads without protective corner sleeves or wear pads โ€” sharp edges can cut through the webbing under load.
  • Do not knot or twist the sling to shorten it. Knotting reduces the WLL by up to 50% and creates unpredictable failure points.
  • In multi-sling lifts, ensure the included angle between sling legs does not exceed 120ยฐ.
  • Do not expose polyester webbing slings to acids, bleaches, or strong alkalis.
  • Never stand under a suspended load. Ensure the lift area is clear of personnel before raising the load.
  • A risk assessment must be in place before any lifting operation. Operation only by competent persons trained in sling use and rigging techniques.

Inspection and Maintenance

Webbing slings must be visually inspected before each use and undergo a thorough examination at least every six months (or in accordance with an examination scheme) by a competent person under LOLER 1998. All inspections must be documented and records retained. Key inspection points include: cuts or tears in the webbing, abrasion damage or worn fibres, broken or damaged stitching, heat damage or melting, chemical contamination or staining, and legibility of the traceability label. Any sling showing signs of damage must be removed from service immediately. Webbing slings cannot be field-repaired โ€” damaged slings must be cut and disposed of to prevent re-use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What colour is an 8 tonne webbing sling?

Blue. Under BS EN 1492-1, blue indicates an 8 tonne WLL. The colour coding allows instant visual identification on busy construction sites where multiple sling capacities are in use simultaneously.

Q: How wide is an 8 tonne duplex sling?

The 8 tonne duplex sling is 240mm wide. This extra-wide strap provides excellent load distribution but requires wider lifting points and more clearance. Ensure the crane hook and any shackles can accommodate the full strap width without bunching.

Q: Can I use an 8 tonne webbing sling instead of chain?

Yes, when the load surface must be protected from scratching or marking, when weight matters for manual handling, and when the environment is within polyester's operating range (-40ยฐC to +100ยฐC). Use chain instead for hot loads above 100ยฐC, chemically aggressive environments, or where sharp edges cannot be protected.

Q: What is the basket hitch capacity?

In a basket hitch, the effective WLL doubles to 16,000 kg. This assumes a symmetrical load with equal weight distribution on both legs and a sling angle not exceeding 120ยฐ. The basket configuration passes the sling under the load with both eyes on the crane hook.

Q: How often should 8 tonne slings be inspected?

Visually inspect before every use. Under LOLER 1998, a thorough examination by a competent person is required at least every six months. For slings used regularly at or near maximum capacity, more frequent examinations may be appropriate.

Q: What is the minimum breaking strength?

With a 7:1 safety factor, the minimum breaking strength is 56,000 kg (56 tonnes). This provides an exceptional safety margin for demanding lifting operations on commercial construction sites.

Q: Are these slings suitable for overhead crane use?

Yes. Duplex webbing slings are widely used with overhead cranes, gantry cranes, and hoists in factory and warehouse environments. The 240mm width provides stable rigging on heavy loads, and the soft material protects finished products during handling.
