5 Tonne Duplex Webbing Sling

Plumalti | 5,000 kg WLL | 150mm Width | Red | BS EN 1492-1 | CE Marked | UKCA Compliant

The Plumalti 5 Tonne Duplex Webbing Sling is a heavy-duty flat lifting sling manufactured from 100% high-tenacity polyester to BS EN 1492-1:2000. The 150mm wide red-coded sling provides a Working Load Limit of 5,000 kg in a straight lift, rising to 10,000 kg in a basket hitch, with dual-layer (duplex) construction for outstanding strength and abrasion resistance. Each sling carries a blue traceability label and is available in lengths from 2m to 12m.

Key Features

  • Manufactured to BS EN 1492-1:2000 โ€” produced from 100% high-tenacity polyester, tested and certified to the European harmonised standard for flat woven webbing slings
  • Duplex (two-layer) construction โ€” two layers of woven polyester stitched together provide superior strength, durability, and abrasion resistance for demanding lifting operations
  • Red colour-coded for 5 Tonne WLL โ€” instant visual identification of Working Load Limit in accordance with the international colour standard
  • 150mm width โ€” distributes the lifting force over a wide bearing area, reducing localised pressure on both the sling and the load surface

Following Brexit, the UK government has confirmed indefinite recognition of CE marking for lifting equipment in Great Britain, meaning businesses can use either UKCA or CE marked accessories provided the equipment is accompanied by a Declaration of Conformity (DoC).

More About This Product

The Plumalti 5 Tonne Duplex Webbing Sling is a heavy-duty flat lifting sling manufactured from 100% high-tenacity polyester to BS EN 1492-1:2000. The 150mm wide red-coded sling provides a Working Load Limit of 5,000 kg in a straight lift โ€” rising to 10,000 kg in a basket hitch configuration. The dual-layer (duplex) construction delivers outstanding strength, durability, and abrasion resistance for demanding commercial and industrial lifting operations. The soft polyester material protects finished surfaces, painted goods, and delicate loads from scratching or damage during handling. Red colour-coded for instant WLL identification in accordance with the international colour standard. Each sling is fitted with a blue traceability label displaying the serial number, WLL, length, and mode factors for straight lift, choke, and basket configurations. Available in lengths from 2m to 12m.

Multi-Leg Sling Configurations

  1. Single-leg straight lift โ€” uses the full 5,000 kg WLL. The simplest configuration, ideal for loads with a single central lifting point or when the sling can be passed through the load and both eyes placed on the hook.
  2. Single-leg choke hitch โ€” wraps the sling around the load and back through one eye, reducing the WLL to 4,000 kg. Provides a secure grip on cylindrical or irregular loads that might slip out of a straight hitch.
  3. Two-leg basket hitch โ€” passes the sling under the load with both eyes on the hook. The effective WLL doubles to 10,000 kg, provided the load is symmetrical and equally distributed on both legs.
  4. Two-sling basket with spreader beam โ€” for wide loads, two 5 tonne slings can be used with a spreader beam to prevent the slings from converging and crushing the load. Total effective capacity depends on the sling angle.
  5. Four-point lift โ€” four slings attached to a lifting beam provide the most stable configuration for large, flat loads such as precast panels, steel frames, and modular units. Each sling must be rated for the load share at the actual sling angle.
  6. Angle factor calculation โ€” as the included angle between sling legs increases, each sling carries a greater proportion of the load. At 60ยฐ each sling carries 58% of the load; at 90ยฐ each carries 71%; at 120ยฐ each carries 100%. Never exceed 120ยฐ.

Certification and Compliance

This product is CE marked in accordance with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EEC and is UKCA compliant for the Great Britain market. Manufactured to the performance requirements of BS EN 1492-1:2000 โ€” the European harmonised standard for flat woven webbing slings used in general purpose lifting operations. Each sling is produced with a 7:1 safety factor, individually serialised, and supplied with full traceability documentation including WLL, length, mode factors, and manufacturer identification. All lifting equipment used on UK construction sites must comply with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).

Safety Information

  • Never exceed the rated Working Load Limit (WLL) for the selected hitch configuration. A choke hitch reduces the WLL to 4,000 kg.
  • Inspect the sling before every use. Remove from service immediately if cuts, fraying, abrasion, heat damage, chemical contamination, or illegible labelling is found.
  • Do not use webbing slings on sharp-edged loads without protective corner sleeves or wear pads โ€” sharp edges can cut through the webbing under load.
  • Do not knot or twist the sling to shorten it. Knotting reduces the WLL by up to 50% and creates unpredictable failure points.
  • In multi-sling lifts, ensure the included angle between sling legs does not exceed 120ยฐ.
  • Do not expose polyester webbing slings to acids, bleaches, or strong alkalis.
  • Never stand under a suspended load. Ensure the lift area is clear of personnel before raising the load.
  • A risk assessment must be in place before any lifting operation. Operation only by competent persons trained in sling use and rigging techniques.

Inspection and Maintenance

Webbing slings must be visually inspected before each use and undergo a thorough examination at least every six months (or in accordance with an examination scheme) by a competent person under LOLER 1998. All inspections must be documented and records retained. Key inspection points include: cuts or tears in the webbing, abrasion damage or worn fibres, broken or damaged stitching, heat damage or melting, chemical contamination or staining, and legibility of the traceability label. Any sling showing signs of damage must be removed from service immediately. Webbing slings cannot be field-repaired โ€” damaged slings must be cut and disposed of to prevent re-use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What colour is a 5 tonne webbing sling?

Red. Under BS EN 1492-1, each WLL capacity has a designated colour: purple (1T), green (2T), yellow (3T), grey (4T), red (5T), brown (6T), blue (8T), and orange (10T+). This allows operators to identify sling capacity instantly without reading labels.

Q: What is the breaking strength of a 5 tonne duplex sling?

With a 7:1 safety factor, the minimum breaking strength is 35,000 kg (35 tonnes). This substantial safety margin accounts for dynamic loading, environmental degradation, and variations in rigging conditions during normal construction site use.

Q: Can I use a 5 tonne sling in a basket hitch to lift 10 tonnes?

Yes. In a basket hitch configuration, the effective WLL doubles to 10,000 kg because the load is shared between both legs of the sling. This assumes a symmetrical load with equal weight distribution and a sling angle not exceeding 120ยฐ.

Q: What lengths are available for the 5 tonne duplex sling?

The 5 tonne duplex webbing sling is available in lengths of 2m, 3m, 4m, 5m, 6m, 8m, 10m, and 12m. If you need a non-standard length, contact our technical team to discuss options.

Q: How do I know when to replace a webbing sling?

Remove a webbing sling from service immediately if you find cuts, tears, or holes in the webbing, abrasion damage exposing inner fibres, broken or worn stitching, heat damage or melting, chemical contamination, or an illegible traceability label. Damaged slings cannot be repaired and must be disposed of.

Q: Are 5 tonne slings suitable for lifting steel beams?

Yes, but always use protective corner sleeves or wear pads at contact points. Steel beams often have sharp edges, weld spatter, and bolt heads that can cut through webbing under tension. The 150mm width provides good load distribution across the beam flange.

Q: What is the difference between WLL and SWL?

WLL (Working Load Limit) and SWL (Safe Working Load) mean the same thing in practice โ€” the maximum load the sling is rated to carry in a given configuration. WLL is the term used in BS EN 1492-1, while SWL is the older term still commonly used on UK construction sites.

Q: Do I need a lifting plan to use a 5 tonne sling?

For routine lifts of known loads, a generic risk assessment and method statement is usually sufficient. For non-routine, complex, or heavy lifts, a formal lifting plan should be prepared by the Appointed Person in accordance with BS 7121.
