5 Tonne Round Sling

Plumalti | 5,000 kg WLL | Red | Endless Loop | BS EN 1492-2 | CE Marked | UKCA Compliant

The Plumalti 5 Tonne Round Sling is an endless-loop lifting sling constructed from continuous strands of high-tenacity polyester yarn encased in a durable, colour-coded tubular woven polyester sleeve. Manufactured to BS EN 1492-2:2000, the red-coded sling provides a Working Load Limit of 5,000 kg in a straight lift - rising to 10,000 kg in a basket hitch configuration. The endless tubular construction allows the sling to flex in any direction, conforming naturally to cylindrical, curved, and irregularly shaped loads. The protective outer sleeve shields the load-bearing polyester core from abrasion, UV degradation, and surface damage, while the soft material protects the load from scratching and marking. Red colour-coded for instant WLL identification in accordance with the international colour standard. Each sling is individually serialised with a blue identification label. Available in effective working lengths (EWL) from 1m to 10m.

CE Marked, UKCA Compliant & BS EN 1492-2 Certified

This product is CE marked in accordance with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EEC and is UKCA compliant for the Great Britain market. Manufactured to the performance requirements of BS EN 1492-2:2000 with a 7:1 safety factor - the minimum breaking strength of the core is seven times the stated Working Load Limit, and the outer sleeve must not rupture below twice the WLL. Each sling is individually serialised and supplied with full traceability documentation including an EC Declaration of Conformity. Following Brexit, the UK government has confirmed indefinite recognition of CE marking for lifting equipment in Great Britain.

Key Features

  • Manufactured to BS EN 1492-2:2000 - produced from 100% high-tenacity polyester, tested and certified to the European harmonised standard for textile round slings
  • Endless loop construction - continuous polyester yarn core inside a protective tubular sleeve provides exceptional strength with multi-directional flexibility
  • Red colour-coded for 5 Tonne WLL - instant visual identification of Working Load Limit in accordance with the international colour standard
  • Protective tubular sleeve - the outer woven polyester cover protects the load-bearing core from abrasion, cuts, UV degradation, and contamination while remaining soft against the load
  • 10,000 kg capacity in basket hitch - in a basket configuration the effective WLL doubles, providing significant versatility for heavier loads
  • 7:1 safety factor - minimum core breaking strength of 35,000 kg, with the outer sleeve rated to withstand at least twice the WLL before rupture
  • Conforms to any load shape - the tubular construction flexes in any direction, naturally wrapping around cylindrical, curved, and irregularly shaped loads for a secure grip
  • Superior choke performance - forms a tighter, more even choke hitch than flat webbing slings, particularly effective on pipes, drums, and cylindrical loads
  • Lightweight and easy to handle - significantly lighter than chain or wire rope slings of equivalent capacity, reducing manual handling strain during rigging
  • Blue identification label - individually serialised with WLL, EWL, mode factors, and manufacturer details for full LOLER traceability

Round Slings in Offshore and Marine-Adjacent Environments

  1. Salt water resistance - polyester round slings are resistant to salt water and maintain their full rated capacity in marine environments. After use in salt water, rinse the sling with fresh water and allow to dry before storage to prevent salt crystal build-up in the core.
  2. Wind loading at coastal sites - construction sites near the coast experience higher and more variable wind conditions. Account for wind loading as a dynamic factor when selecting sling capacity, particularly for loads with a large surface area that acts as a sail.
  3. Corrosion-free alternative - unlike chain and wire rope slings, polyester round slings do not corrode in damp, humid, or salt-spray environments. This eliminates the need for corrosion inspections and extends working life in coastal and marine-adjacent applications.
  4. Offshore lifting standards - for offshore lifting operations, additional standards and regulations may apply beyond LOLER, including DROPS (Dropped Objects Prevention Scheme) and DNV certification requirements. Contact our technical team for guidance.
  5. UV exposure considerations - coastal and offshore sites often have higher UV exposure than inland sites. Polyester degrades under prolonged UV exposure, so inspect slings more frequently for signs of surface chalking, colour fading, and fibre brittleness.
  6. Colour identification in poor visibility - the red colour coding of the 5 tonne sling provides good visibility in fog, rain, and low-light conditions typical of coastal construction sites, reducing the risk of selecting the wrong capacity sling.

Certification and Compliance

This product is CE marked in accordance with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EEC and is UKCA compliant for the Great Britain market. Manufactured to the performance requirements of BS EN 1492-2:2000 - the European harmonised standard for textile round slings used in general purpose lifting operations. Each sling is produced with a 7:1 safety factor, individually serialised, and supplied with full traceability documentation including an EC Declaration of Conformity. All lifting equipment used on UK construction sites must comply with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).

Safety Information

  • Never exceed the rated Working Load Limit (WLL) for the selected hitch configuration. A choke hitch reduces the WLL to 4,000 kg.
  • Inspect the sling before every use. Check the outer sleeve for cuts, tears, abrasion, and holes. If the inner core yarns are exposed, remove from service immediately.
  • Do not use round slings on sharp-edged loads without protective wear sleeves - sharp edges can cut through the outer sleeve and damage the core.
  • Do not knot or twist the sling to shorten it. Knotting damages the core yarns and dramatically reduces the WLL.
  • Position the choke point at the natural 120ยฐ angle. Forcing a tighter choke generates friction that can damage the sleeve and reduce capacity.
  • Do not expose polyester round slings to strong alkalis, concentrated acids, or temperatures above 100ยฐC.
  • Never stand under a suspended load. Maintain exclusion zones during all lifting operations.
  • A risk assessment must be in place before any lifting operation. Operation only by competent persons trained in sling use and rigging techniques.

Inspection and Maintenance

Round slings must be visually inspected before each use and undergo a thorough examination at least every six months by a competent person under LOLER 1998. Inspection must cover the full circumference of the outer sleeve on all sides, paying particular attention to bearing points where the sling contacts the load. Key indicators of damage include: cuts, tears, or holes in the outer sleeve; exposed core yarns; lumps, hard spots, or unevenness in the core; abrasion wear or thinning of the sleeve; discolouration from chemical or heat exposure; and damage to or illegibility of the identification label. Any round sling showing signs of damage must be removed from service immediately. Round slings cannot be field-repaired - damaged slings must be cut and disposed of to prevent re-use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does EWL mean and how does it relate to circumference?

EWL stands for Effective Working Length - the usable length of the sling when laid flat. Because a round sling is an endless loop, the EWL is exactly half the total circumference. For example, a 3m EWL round sling has a 6m total circumference. All sizes listed on this page are EWL measurements. The circumference shown on the sling's identification label will be double the EWL you select.

Q: What colour is a 5 tonne round sling?

Red. Under BS EN 1492-2, red indicates 5 tonne WLL. The bright colour provides good visibility in poor lighting and adverse weather conditions.

Q: Are round slings suitable for marine environments?

Yes. Polyester round slings resist salt water, do not corrode, and maintain full rated capacity in marine and coastal environments. Rinse with fresh water after salt water exposure and allow to dry before storage.

Q: What is the breaking strength of a 5 tonne round sling?

The minimum core breaking strength is 35,000 kg with a 7:1 safety factor. The outer sleeve must withstand at least 10,000 kg (2x WLL) before rupture under BS EN 1492-2.

Q: Can round slings be used for repeated lifts?

Yes. Round slings are designed for repeated use and are commonly used in production line, warehouse, and construction site operations where the same lift is performed many times. Inspect before each use and undergo thorough examination every six months.

Q: How do I choose between a 5 tonne round sling and a 5 tonne duplex?

Choose round slings for cylindrical, curved, or irregular loads where multi-directional flexibility is needed. Choose duplex slings for flat-sided loads like beams, panels, and palletised materials where a wide, flat bearing surface is beneficial.

Q: What mode factors apply to round slings?

The same mode factors apply as for duplex slings: straight lift = full WLL (5,000 kg), choke hitch = 80% (4,000 kg), basket hitch = 200% (10,000 kg). Always check the identification label for the exact figures.

Q: Can I use round slings at height on tower crane operations?

Yes. Round slings are lighter than chain and duplex slings, making them easier to handle at height. The colour coding allows quick identification from a distance, which is valuable when slings are being selected and rigged on upper floors.
