Using Round Slings with Lifting Beams and Spreader Bars

1. Why use a lifting beam - for wide or long loads, a lifting beam or spreader bar keeps the sling legs vertical, eliminating angle factors and using the full rated WLL of each sling. Without a beam, angled sling legs reduce the effective capacity.
2. Sling connection to beam - round slings connect to lifting beams using shackles, master links, or by passing the sling directly through the beam's lifting lugs. Ensure the connection point allows the sling to seat flat without bunching or twisting.
3. Load balance - when using round slings with a lifting beam, the beam's lifting point must be directly above the load's centre of gravity. If the load is asymmetric, use an adjustable beam or position the slings at unequal distances to achieve balance.
4. Minimum bend radius - round slings require a minimum bend radius at connection points (typically the sling diameter). Ensure shackle pins, beam lugs, and crane hooks are large enough in diameter to avoid crushing the sling at the bearing point.
5. Double-wrapped connections - for extra security, round slings can be double-wrapped around lifting beam lugs. This increases the contact area and reduces the risk of the sling slipping off under load. Check that double-wrapping doesn't reduce the effective length below requirements.

Safety Information

• Never exceed the rated Working Load Limit (WLL) for the selected hitch configuration. A choke hitch reduces the WLL to 4,800 kg.
