A hydraulic cylinder converts oil pressure into force, and at 700 bar a surprisingly small cylinder produces an enormous one. The specification that decides which you need is rarely the tonnage — it is usually the collapsed height and the stroke.

Single acting cylinders extend under pressure and return by spring or load weight. Double acting cylinders are driven both ways, which matters where the ram must be retracted under control or against resistance. Hollow centre cylinders let a rod, bolt or cable pass through the middle, which is how tensioning and pulling jobs are done.

A cylinder lifts a load. It does not support one. Crib as you lift, and never work under a load held on hydraulics alone.

Manufacturer specification. Maximum Pressure: 700 Bar. Hydraulic Coupler: TBC 381F(PT3/8). Spring return. Marked with CE, capacity, manufacturers ID, product ID mark and traceability code.

Manufacturer Specification | LOLER Ready

Maximum Pressure: 700 Bar. Hydraulic Coupler: TBC 381F(PT3/8). Spring return. Marked with CE, capacity, manufacturers ID, product ID mark and traceability code. Under LOLER 1998, lifting equipment and accessories require thorough examination by a competent person at intervals not exceeding 12 months. Work equipment that does not lift falls under PUWER 1998 and must be inspected and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Suitable Applications

Machinery installation and alignment, structural jacking, bearing and bush work, press and die operations, rail and track maintenance, bolt tensioning and pulling. Low profile and hollow centre types exist for the jobs a conventional cylinder cannot reach or cannot do at all. Pairs with hand or powered pumps rated to the same pressure.

More About This Product

Hydraulic cylinders are specified on tonnage and chosen on geometry. A large cylinder that will not fit in the gap is no more use than no cylinder at all, which is why the collapsed height and the stroke are usually the numbers that decide the purchase.

The second consideration is what happens after the lift. A cylinder holds a load only while the system holds pressure, and hydraulic systems lose pressure through seals, through leaks and through valves that are not quite seated. Cribbing is not belt and braces; it is the only thing supporting the load once the pump stops.

Pressure, Force and Working Safely at 700 Bar

Force is pressure multiplied by area, which is why a modest cylinder at 700 bar develops tonnages that seem out of proportion to its size. As an illustration of the arithmetic, a ram of 100 square centimetres at 700 bar produces in the order of 70 tonnes. Work from your cylinder’s own rating rather than from this example. The equipment is small; the energy stored in the system is not.

Every component must be rated to the highest pressure the system can generate. A 700 bar pump feeding a 350 bar hose is not half a system, it is an accident with a delay on it. Hoses, couplers, gauges, valves and the cylinder itself all need checking, and the circuit is limited by whichever is lowest.

Injected hydraulic fluid is a surgical emergency. At 700 bar a pinhole leak produces a jet that penetrates skin without the operator necessarily feeling it as more than a sting, and the fluid then causes tissue damage that develops over hours. The entry wound looks trivial and the injury is not. Anyone who suspects fluid injection needs a hospital immediately and needs to say what fluid it was. This is why leaks are located with a piece of cardboard and never with a hand.

A cylinder lifts; it does not support. Crib as the load rises, block it before anyone approaches, and never rely on a closed valve to hold a load with people underneath. Valves seat imperfectly, seals weep, and a load that settles two millimetres overnight has told you something about the system you would rather have learned differently.

How to Use

  1. Check the collapsed height against your clearance: This is usually the deciding dimension, not the tonnage.
  2. Match the pump reservoir to the cylinder's oil capacity: Too small and you run out of oil mid-stroke.
  3. Check every component is rated to the system pressure: Hoses, couplers, gauges. The system is limited by its lowest rated part.
  4. Bear on solid structural points: Both under the cylinder and on the load. Use spreader plates where needed.
  5. Crib as you lift: A cylinder lifts, it does not support. Place blocking as the load rises.
  6. Never run the ram to its limit under load: And lower under control, watching the load throughout.

Warning: A cylinder is a lifting device, not a supporting device. Never work under a load supported only by a hydraulic cylinder. Injected hydraulic fluid is a surgical emergency requiring immediate hospital treatment — never search for a leak by hand.

Safety Information

  • For use by trained operators only.
  • Never exceed the rated working pressure.
  • All hoses, couplers, gauges and cylinders must be rated to the system pressure.
  • Never search for a hydraulic leak by hand — injected fluid is a surgical emergency.
  • Never work under a load supported only by a cylinder.
  • Use only the specified hydraulic oil.
  • Bleed air from the system before working.
  • Depressurise before disconnecting any component.
  • Withdraw any component showing leakage, damage or corrosion.

Inspection and Maintenance

Hydraulic equipment announces its condition through leaks and through feel. Check for weeping around every joint, seal and connection, since a system that leaks under pressure will lose load. Inspect hoses along their full length for abrasion, bulging, kinking and any exposed reinforcement — a high pressure hose showing braid is finished. Check couplers for damage and full engagement. Test the action through its full travel and feel for sponginess, which indicates air or a failing seal. Keep oil at the correct level with the specified grade and the reservoir sealed, since dirt is what destroys hydraulic components.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Single or double acting?

Single acting extends under pressure and returns by spring or load weight, which is simpler and cheaper. Double acting is driven both ways, which you need where the ram must retract under control or against resistance.

Q: What is a hollow centre cylinder for?

It lets a rod, bolt or cable pass through the middle — the basis of bolt tensioning and pulling work, which a solid ram cannot do at all.

Q: Which pump do I need?

One whose reservoir comfortably exceeds the cylinder's oil capacity through its full stroke. The cylinder datasheet gives the figure.

Q: Single or double acting?

Single acting extends under pressure and returns by spring or load weight, which is simpler and cheaper. Double acting is driven both ways, which you need where the ram must retract under control or against resistance.

Q: What is a hollow centre cylinder for?

It lets a rod, bolt or cable pass through the middle, which is the basis of bolt tensioning and pulling work. A solid ram cannot do that job at all.

Q: Which pump do I need?

One whose reservoir comfortably exceeds the cylinder's oil capacity through its full stroke, and rated to the same pressure. Run out of oil mid-stroke and the lift stops where it is.

Q: Can I leave a load on a cylinder?

No. Crib it. A cylinder holds a load only while the system holds pressure, and seals weep, valves seat imperfectly and hoses fail.

Q: What happens if fluid is injected under the skin?

It is a surgical emergency requiring immediate hospital treatment, even though the entry wound looks trivial. Tell the hospital what fluid it was. Never search for a leak by hand — use cardboard.

Q: Why does collapsed height matter more than tonnage?

Because a cylinder that will not fit in the available gap is no use whatever its rating. On most jacking jobs the geometry decides the choice and the tonnage follows.

Q: How do I know this is genuine certified product?

It arrives with a certificate and carries a traceability code tying it back to its manufacturing batch. A product whose markings have become illegible must be withdrawn regardless of condition.
