How to Use the Petroleum and Flammable Liquid Cupboard

  1. Site the cupboard on a firm, level floor in a well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, naked flames and other ignition sources.
  2. Adjust the galvanised shelves to suit your containers, ensuring each shelf is fully seated on its supports.
  3. Store flammable liquids in their original, correctly labelled, sealed containers.
  4. Keep only the quantities permitted by your DSEAR and fire risk assessments, and keep incompatible substances apart.
  5. Use the sump drainage plug to safely empty any retained liquid using a suitable absorbent and disposal route.
  6. Lock the cupboard after every use and restrict key access to authorised, trained personnel only.

Warning:
Flammable and petroleum liquids are dangerous substances. Keep away from all ignition sources, store only sealed, correctly labelled containers and observe the quantities permitted by your DSEAR and fire risk assessments. Always consult the safety data sheet (SDS) for each substance.

Safety Information

  • Carry out a DSEAR risk assessment before storing flammable or petroleum liquids and follow the control measures it identifies.
  • Keep the cupboard away from heat, sparks, naked flames and other ignition sources.
  • Ensure the storage area is well ventilated and store only authorised quantities.
  • Keep all liquids in their original, correctly labelled containers with the lids secure.
  • Provide and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and have suitable spill absorbents to hand.
  • Keep the cupboard locked when not in use and limit key access to trained, authorised personnel.

Inspection and Maintenance

Clean the paintwork periodically with warm soapy water or a foaming cleaner. Oil the hinges and lock sparingly as required with a light oil (3-in-1 or similar). Inspect the integral sump regularly and drain it via the plug, cleaning out any spillage promptly with a suitable absorbent. Check that warning labels remain legible. Replacement locks and spare keys are available on request.
