Anchorages
What makes a suitable anchor
An anchor point for fall arrest has to withstand substantial force. Structural steel and sound concrete are usually suitable; handrails, ladders, ductwork and pipework generally are not unless specifically engineered for the purpose. If you cannot verify what is behind a fixing, do not use it.
Temporary or permanent
Beam anchors, girder clamps and anchor slings give a point that moves with the work and suit short-duration tasks. Eyebolts, posts and lifeline systems are permanent installations that need periodic recertification, and make sense where the same task repeats.
Position
Anchor overhead wherever possible. An anchor at or below foot level increases the fall distance and introduces the possibility of the line passing over an edge, which needs equipment rated for that.
What can I use as an anchor point?
Structural steel or sound concrete, verified as suitable. Handrails, ladders and pipework are generally not appropriate unless specifically engineered and certified for anchoring.
Can I anchor below foot level?
Only with equipment rated for it. Low anchoring increases fall distance and usually means the line passes over an edge, requiring an edge-rated block.
Do anchor points need certifying?
Permanent installations need periodic examination and recertification. Temporary anchors should be inspected before use and form part of the examination regime for the system attached to them.
