Conquip Rebar Lifting Cage

Robust steel cage for safely transporting straight lengths of rebar around site by crane. Suitable for rebar lengths from 3300mm to 6400mm. Shackle attachment, roll frame for smooth horizontal-to-vertical lift, tie-down points, fork pockets for empty manoeuvring. WLL 2000kg. Purchase only.

The Conquip Rebar Lifting Cage is a robust, secure steel cage designed specifically for transporting straight lengths of rebar safely around site. Developed in response to contractors needing a safer method to repeatedly move and lift rebar from horizontal stored positions in and out of high-rise buildings or shaft locations, the cage represents a step up in safety from traditional sling-based methods by keeping the entire load contained within the cage during every lift. The cage features a shackle on one end for attaching to the crane hook and a roll frame on the other end, ensuring a smooth transition as the cage is raised from the horizontal load position to the vertical lift position. Tie-down points and door latches secure the rebar inside the cage during transit, preventing individual lengths from shifting during lifts. Fork pockets allow easy manoeuvrability around site when the cage is empty, making it practical to position the cage at the storage area for loading without crane involvement. The cage suits rebar lengths from 3300mm to 6400mm, with a 2000kg Working Load Limit covering the typical weight of a full bundle.

Key Features

  • Robust steel cage construction designed for repeated heavy-duty rebar lifts
  • Shackle on one end for direct attachment to the crane hook
  • Roll frame on the opposite end ensures smooth transition from horizontal load position to vertical lift position
  • Tie-down points inside the cage secure the rebar bundle during lifts
  • Door latches secure the cage closed once loaded
  • Fork pockets allow forklift manoeuvring around site when the cage is empty
  • Suitable for rebar lengths from 3300mm to 6400mm
  • 2000kg Working Load Limit covers typical bundle weights for civils, infrastructure, and high-rise projects
  • Best-practice alternative to slinging individual or bundled rebar lengths

Suitable Applications

The Rebar Lifting Cage is the safer and more efficient method for transporting straight rebar around site, particularly in repeat-lift scenarios. It is especially valuable on high-rise projects where rebar must be lifted from ground-level storage to upper floors via tower crane, and on shaft excavation projects where rebar must be lowered into deep shafts. The cage replaces the traditional approach of slinging bundles of rebar (which carries the risk of individual lengths shifting or slipping out of the sling) with a fully-contained steel enclosure. For curved or pre-bent rebar, the cage may not be appropriate -- contact us to discuss alternatives.

How to Use

  1. Carry out a pre-use inspection: cage frame, shackle, roll frame, door latches, tie-down points, structural welds
  2. Confirm the cage's WLL of 2000kg is rated for the rebar bundle weight to be lifted
  3. Position the cage horizontally at the rebar storage area, opening the cage doors
  4. Load straight rebar lengths into the cage -- ensure all lengths are between 3300mm and 6400mm
  5. Distribute the load evenly along the cage length
  6. Secure the rebar to the tie-down points using approved lashing
  7. Close the cage doors and engage all door latches
  8. Connect the crane hook to the shackle at the lifting end
  9. Take the strain slowly -- the cage will rotate around the roll frame as the load transitions from horizontal to vertical
  10. Verify the cage is hanging cleanly in the vertical position before completing the lift
  11. Position the cage at the destination, lower into the receiving area
  12. Once stable, release the door latches, untie the rebar, and remove individual lengths as required

Warning: Working Load Limit of 2000kg must not be exceeded. Rebar must be securely tied down within the cage before any lift -- never lift an unsecured load. Door latches must be fully engaged before lifting commences. The roll frame must rotate freely -- do not lift if the roll frame is jammed. Inspect before every use under LOLER 1998. Ground personnel must remain clear of the lifting zone during the horizontal-to-vertical transition.

Safety Information

  • Working Load Limit of 2000kg must not be exceeded under any circumstance
  • Verify rebar bundle weight before every lift
  • Rebar lengths outside the 3300-6400mm range must not be loaded -- shorter lengths can shift, longer lengths can extend beyond the cage
  • All rebar must be secured to the tie-down points before lifting
  • Door latches must be fully engaged before lifting commences
  • Pre-use inspection required before every lift; thorough examination every six months under LOLER 1998
  • Cages with damaged welds, deformed shackle, jammed roll frame, missing door latches, or compromised tie-down points must be removed from service immediately
  • Lifting must be carried out by a competent crane operator with a trained banksman or signaller
  • Ground personnel must remain clear of the lifting zone during the horizontal-to-vertical transition (the cage swings during this rotation)
  • Do not stand directly beneath a loaded cage during lifting or placement
  • Curved or pre-bent rebar should not be loaded -- the cage is designed for straight bars only

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why was this cage developed?

In response to contractors looking for a safer method to repeatedly move and lift lengths of straight rebar from a horizontal stored position, in and out of high-rise or shaft locations.

Q: What's an alternative method?

Slinging is an alternative, but this cage is a more secure and robust approach and keeps the load contained for a much safer lift.

Q: How is the rebar secured?

Once the lengths are inside the cage, there are tie-down points and door latches to secure the load.

Q: What's the role of the roll frame?

The roll frame on one end allows the cage to rotate smoothly from a horizontal load position to a vertical lift position as the crane takes the strain. This eliminates the risk of the cage swinging unpredictably during the lift transition.

Q: Can I use this for curved or bent rebar?

The cage is designed for straight rebar lengths between 3300mm and 6400mm. Curved or pre-bent rebar will not load correctly and should be lifted by alternative methods.
