Images show a representative ST chain hoist. Your unit is built to the configuration you select.

The ST05 is the 125 kg to 500 kg frame within the STAHL ST chain hoist programme, one of the most comprehensive chain hoist ranges available anywhere. The ST05 is the smallest frame in the ST programme and the natural choice for workshop, maintenance and light production duties. The 125 kg build is classified M6, which is an unusually high duty group at that capacity and makes it suitable for repetitive cycling rather than occasional lifts.

Every frame in the ST programme shares the same patented suspension. The hoist hangs directly from a chain guide machined in solid cast iron rather than from a bolted bracket or a pressed housing, which removes a failure path that most competing chain hoists still carry.

Key Features

  • Capacity range — 125 kg to 500 kg on the ST05 frame, part of a programme spanning 125 kg to 6,300 kg
  • Direct cast iron suspension — suspended directly from the solid cast iron chain guide, a patented arrangement that makes the ST one of the safest chain hoists in its class
  • Overmounted drive shaft — inspection and maintenance without stripping the gearbox, cutting service downtime
  • Short, compact construction — minimal headroom and a tight footprint so hook height and floor space are used to the maximum
  • Two speed lifting as standard — fast and creep speeds across the range for accurate placement without sacrificing cycle time
  • Slipping clutch overload protection — fitted as standard, protecting the hoist, the load and the supporting structure
  • Modular suspension — hook, eye, rigid bracket, push trolley or powered electric trolley on the same hoist body

Technical Specifications

Standard build specification: 3.0 m lifting height, 48 V low voltage Schneider controls, 1.8 m plug-in IP65 rated control pendant, slack chain collector sized to the selected lift height, hoist enclosure protection to IP55, overload protection via slipping clutch, electro-galvanised load chain. Lift height is selected when ordering, from the 3 m standard build up to 15.0 m on single fall or 7.5 m on two fall, using a steel collector giving 15.0 m on single fall or 7.5 m on two fall. Additional chain is charged per metre and is already included in the price shown for each configuration.

CMCO Group | EN ISO 9001 Certified | ATEX and IECEx Available

The ST chain hoist is manufactured by STAHL CraneSystems GmbH within the Columbus McKinnon group, under an ISO 9001 certified quality system. Units are CE marked and supplied with a Declaration of Conformity and test certificate. Explosion-protected ST Ex variants are certified to ATEX and IECEx for use in Zone 1, Zone 21 and Zone 22.

More About the ST Programme

The ST is a platform rather than a single product. The same hoist body accepts a suspension hook, a suspension eye, a rigid suspension bracket, a push trolley or a powered electric trolley, and the trolley is available in single speed or two speed form. That flexibility is why the ST turns up under standard cranes, under off-standard cranes and inside bespoke systems built by third party crane manufacturers.

Around the core hoist, STAHL builds a family of derivatives sharing the same mechanics. The STK short headroom trolley gains extra hook height in low buildings. The STF pairs the ST with Magnetek IMPULSE frequency inverters for precise movement and drive level diagnostics. The STD dual chain hoist runs two synchronised chains so long or unbalanced loads lift without swing, and the STB is a Big Bag variant of it.

Suitable Applications

The ST is used across general manufacturing, machine and plant engineering, automotive, food production, chemicals, steel and concrete, transport and logistics. Typical duties on the ST05 frame are workshop and maintenance lifting on jib and gantry cranes, production line handling, machine loading, and hoist duty inside larger crane installations built by systems manufacturers.

Configuring Your ST05 Chain Hoist

  1. Establish the working load limit, including any lifting accessories, and select the capacity from the table above.
  2. Confirm the duty group. Where the same capacity appears in more than one ISO group, the higher group gives a longer service life under frequent use.
  3. Choose the lifting speed. Faster options shorten cycle times where headroom and duty allow.
  4. Select the suspension: hook for fixed positions, push trolley for manual traverse along a beam, or electric trolley where the load is moved under power.
  5. Select the lift height. Anything from the 3 m standard build up to 10 m can be chosen on this page, and the correct chain collector for that height is included in the price shown.
  6. Add limit switches if required. Overtravel cut-offs protect the hoist; a travel limit does the same on powered trolleys.
  7. Confirm supply voltage, pendant length and any inverter, ATEX or central control requirement before the order is placed.

Every ST chain hoist is supplied with a slack chain collector sized to the lift height you select, so there is nothing separate to order. Two fall builds hold half the chain of a single fall build of the same frame, which is why the taller lift heights are not offered on every configuration. If you need a lift height that is not listed, contact us and we will quote it.

Safety Information

  • Only trained and competent operators should use the hoist, and only within the marked working load limit.
  • Never use the slipping clutch as a working overload cut-off. It is a protective device, not an operating control.
  • Do not use limit switches to stop the hoist in normal operation. They are safety devices for overtravel.
  • Never lift people, and never allow a load to travel over anyone.
  • Check that the load chain runs freely, is correctly seated in the chain guide and is not twisted before every shift.
  • Do not modify the hoist, its suspension or its controls. Any change affects the CE conformity of the unit.

Inspection and Maintenance

Under LOLER, lifting equipment used at work must be thoroughly examined by a competent person at least every twelve months, and at least every six months where the equipment is used to lift people or forms part of a lifting accessory arrangement. Between examinations, operators should carry out a pre-use check covering chain condition, hook and latch, brake function, limit switch operation and control response.

The overmounted drive shaft is the reason the ST is straightforward to service. Routine inspection reaches the drive train without dismantling the gearbox, which keeps planned maintenance short. Load chain should be lubricated in service and replaced when wear reaches the manufacturer's discard criteria. Brake and clutch settings must only be adjusted by a competent engineer working to the manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What capacities does the ST05 frame cover?

125 kg to 500 kg. The wider ST programme runs from 125 kg to 6,300 kg across six frames, so if your load sits outside this range there will be another frame that suits.

Q: What is the standard lifting height, and how far can it go?

The standard build is 3.0 m and lift heights up to 10 m can be selected directly on this page. The ST05 frame will take up to 15.0 m on single fall or 7.5 m on two fall with the correct chain collector, so contact us if you need more than 10 m.

Q: Do I need to order a chain collector separately?

No. A slack chain collector is included with every hoist and is sized to the lift height you choose, so the price you see already covers it. The collectors listed separately in our accessories are replacements for hoists already in service.

Q: What suspension options are available?

Suspension hook, suspension eye, rigid suspension and push trolley for manual traverse. An electric trolley gives powered traverse in single or two speed form, for use under standard and off-standard cranes.

Q: How is the hoist protected against overload?

A slipping clutch is fitted as standard. It limits the load the hoist can apply, protecting the hoist, the load and the supporting structure. It is a protective device and should not be relied on as an operating control.

Q: What limit switches can be fitted?

A top hook cut-off is available. The combined top and bottom cut-off is not offered on the ST05 frame.

Q: Is the ST available for explosion-protected areas?

Yes. The ST Ex is certified to ATEX and IECEx for Zone 1, Zone 21 and Zone 22, and is suitable for demanding outdoor use.

Q: What ingress protection does the hoist offer?

The hoist enclosure is protected to IP55 as standard, and the plug-in control pendant is rated IP65.

Q: How often does the hoist need thorough examination?

At least every twelve months under LOLER for lifting goods, or every six months where people are lifted or the unit forms part of a lifting accessory arrangement, alongside the manufacturer's scheduled maintenance.
