Conquip Mechanical Precast Grab

Mechanically operated crane attachment, also known as a Jersey Grab, for transporting and placing precast kerbs and concrete barriers. Fully automatic load and release mechanism with a wide opening width. WLL 4000kg.

The Conquip Mechanical Precast Grab is a mechanically operated crane attachment, also known as a Jersey Grab, designed for the transport and placement of precast concrete barriers and kerbs. The grab features a fully automatic load and release mechanism that engages when lifted under load and releases cleanly when set down, eliminating the need for separate sling or rigger involvement on each cycle. The wide opening width accommodates a broad range of large kerbs, Jersey barriers, and similar precast concrete elements. Adjustment is straightforward via a single locating pin, and the integrated handles enable the operator on the ground to guide the grab for accurate placement of each block. The 4000kg Working Load Limit covers heavy precast barriers up to standard Jersey barrier weights with margin. Safe and secure transportation, repeatable placement, and reduced manual handling make this the standard tool for high-volume kerb-laying and barrier-placement operations on civils, infrastructure, and highways projects.

Key Features

  • Fully automatic load and release mechanism for quick and easy material movement
  • Wide opening width (0-815mm) allows usage with large kerbs and Jersey barriers
  • Easily adjusted using a single locating pin
  • Integrated handles for accurate placement of blocks by ground operator
  • 4000kg Working Load Limit covers full range of standard Jersey barriers and large kerbs
  • Safe and secure method for transporting and placing precast concrete elements
  • Reduces manual handling, increasing efficiency and improving site safety
  • Robust steel construction for repeated heavy-duty use

Suitable Applications

The Mechanical Precast Grab is the standard tool for high-volume precast kerb laying and concrete barrier placement on civils, highways, infrastructure, and traffic management projects. Common applications include Jersey barrier placement and removal, large kerb section laying, precast concrete element repositioning, and traffic management deployments. For smaller individual kerbs, the Kerb Lifter or Kerb Gripper may be more suitable; for cube-shaped concrete blocks, the Block Grab is the appropriate tool.

How to Use

  1. Carry out a pre-use inspection: clamp jaws, automatic mechanism, locating pin, lifting attachment, structural welds
  2. Confirm the grab's WLL of 4000kg is rated for the block weight being lifted
  3. Adjust the grab opening using the locating pin to suit the block width (0-815mm range)
  4. Position the grab over the block with jaws parallel to the block's lifting faces
  5. Lower the grab onto the block -- the automatic mechanism engages under load
  6. Take the strain slowly and verify the grip is secure before completing the lift
  7. Use the integrated handles to guide accurate placement at the destination
  8. Lower the block into final position -- the automatic mechanism releases when the load is set down
  9. Lift the grab clear, ready for the next cycle

Warning: Working Load Limit of 4000kg must not be exceeded. The grab opening must be correctly adjusted to suit the block width. Do not lift damaged, cracked, or unstable blocks. Ground personnel guiding the grab via the handles must remain alert to crush hazards. Inspect before every use under LOLER 1998.

Safety Information

  • Working Load Limit of 4000kg must not be exceeded under any circumstance
  • Verify block or barrier weight before every lift -- standard Jersey barriers vary by length and reinforcement
  • Adjust the grab opening using the locating pin BEFORE positioning over the block
  • Confirm the locating pin is fully engaged and secure before the lift commences
  • The automatic mechanism must be inspected for free movement before each lift
  • Pre-use inspection required; thorough examination every six months under LOLER 1998
  • Grabs with worn jaw faces, seized mechanisms, missing locating pins, or damaged welds must be removed from service
  • Lifting must be carried out by a competent crane operator with a trained banksman
  • Ground personnel using the handles for placement guidance must stay clear of pinch points and crush zones
  • Do not stand directly beneath a loaded barrier during lifting or placement
  • Damaged or cracked blocks must not be lifted -- use alternative methods

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What blocks and barriers can this grab handle?

The grab has an opening width of 0โ€“815mm, suiting Jersey barriers, large kerbs, and similar precast concrete elements. The 4000kg WLL covers standard Jersey barriers with margin.

Q: How does the load engage and release?

The grab features a fully automatic load and release mechanism โ€” it engages when lifted under load and releases cleanly when the block is set down, with no manual rigger involvement on each cycle.

Q: How is the opening adjusted for different block sizes?

Adjustment is via a single locating pin, which sets the opening within the 0โ€“815mm range to suit the block width. The pin must be fully engaged before the lift commences.

Q: What is the difference between this and the Block Grab or Kerb Lifter?

The Mechanical Precast Grab is intended for large kerbs and Jersey barriers. For smaller individual kerbs the Kerb Lifter or Kerb Gripper is more suitable, and for cube-shaped concrete blocks the Block Grab is the appropriate tool.
