Suitable Applications

The 1542.1 Mechanical Kerb Grab is designed for groundwork contractors, highway maintenance teams and civil engineering firms handling precast concrete products. It is commonly used for lifting and placing kerb stones, concrete steps, edging angles, L-stones and similar items during road construction, footpath installation, drainage works and landscaping projects. The lifting eye allows a single operative to move heavy kerbs with the assistance of a digger, telehandler or crane, significantly reducing manual handling risk. The rotating handles make the grab effective in trenches, tight corners and other confined working areas.

How to Use the Mechanical Kerb Grab

  1. Adjust the opening of the grab to match the width of the kerb or concrete product being lifted.
  2. Position the rubber-lined jaws around the product, ensuring a firm and centred grip.
  3. For manual carrying, use the ergonomic handles. Ensure two operatives are used for heavy loads.
  4. For mechanised lifting, attach a chain sling or crane hook to the lifting eye. Ensure the connection is secure.
  5. Lift the product slowly and check for grip security before proceeding.
  6. Transport to the placement location and lower carefully into position.
  7. Release the grab by widening the jaws and removing from the product.

Certification and Compliance

This product is CE marked and supplied with a full EC Declaration of Conformity in accordance with the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. A UKCA certificate is also provided where required for the Great Britain market. Built in conformance with official labour safety regulations. All lifting equipment used on UK construction sites must comply with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). Manual handling operations should comply with the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.

Safety Information

  • Never exceed the rated capacity of 250kg.
  • Ensure the rubber-lined jaws are in good condition and providing a secure grip before lifting.
  • Replace worn rubber jaw linings promptly to maintain grip effectiveness.
  • When using with a crane or chain sling, ensure the connection to the lifting eye is secure.
  • Do not lift over personnel โ€” clear the area below the lift zone.
  • A risk assessment must be carried out prior to using this equipment.
  • Required PPE: hard hat, safety boots, gloves, and hi-vis vest.
  • The type plate must remain present and legible at all times.

Inspection and Maintenance

The kerb grab must be inspected before each use. Check the rubber jaw linings for wear and replace if grip is compromised. Inspect the lifting eye, handle mechanism, adjustment system and all pivot points. The grab should undergo a thorough examination at least every 12 months by a competent person in accordance with LOLER 1998. Keep the adjustment mechanism clean and lubricated for smooth operation.
