A vertical plate clamp grips the edge of a steel plate so it can be lifted, turned and moved upright. This hinged version is built for lifting, turning through 180° and the vertical transfer of steel plates and fabrications, with four capacities from 500 kg to 3,000 kg.
Its hoisting eye is hinged and moves in all directions, so the clamp can take the load from any direction as the plate is turned. A locking device holds the jaw closed on the plate, and a hook-up facility allows the clamp to be fitted with the plate lying flat. Choose by both plate weight and thickness: the jaw opening runs from 0 to 15mm on the CL05 up to 0 to 30mm on the CL30. A datasheet is available to download on this page.
Key Features
- Lift, turn and transfer — designed for lifting, turning through 180° and vertical transfer of plate
- Hinged hoisting eye — moves in all directions so the plate can be lifted from any direction
- Locking device — locks the jaw onto the plate before the lift
- Hook-up facility — lets the clamp be fitted easily to a plate in the horizontal position
- Generous jaw aperture — handles plates of varying thickness within each model's range
- Four capacities — 500 kg, 1,000 kg, 2,000 kg and 3,000 kg

Lifting Accessory | LOLER Thorough Examination Every 6 Months
Part of the Raptor range, supplied by WOLFF Onsite. If you need a certificate of conformity or test certificate with your order, let us know when you order and we will confirm what can be supplied.
Suitable Applications
Steel fabrication and stockholding, shipbuilding, plate processing and profiling, structural steel shops, tank and vessel fabrication, and loading and unloading plate from racks and vehicles.
How to Use
- Check the plate weight is within the clamp capacity and its thickness within the jaw opening
- Open the jaw and push the clamp fully onto the plate edge
- Engage the locking device so the jaw grips the plate
- Attach the hoist hook to the hoisting eye with the latch closed
- Take the weight slowly and check the grip before raising further
- Land the plate fully supported before releasing the lock and removing the clamp
Safety Information
- Use one clamp per plate unless a lift plan specifies otherwise
- Do not lift plate that is thinner than the minimum or thicker than the maximum jaw opening
- Do not use on plate harder than the clamp is designed for or with surface coatings that prevent grip
- Never lift more than one plate at a time
- Keep people well clear while plates are turned or lifted
- Always confirm the locking device is engaged before taking the load
Inspection and Maintenance
Before each use check the gripping cam and pad teeth are clean and sharp, the locking device engages and holds, and the hinged eye moves freely without excessive wear. Look for cracks or distortion in the body and jaw. Plate clamps are lifting accessories, so under LOLER 1998 they should be thoroughly examined by a competent person at least every 6 months.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can the clamp turn plate over?
Yes. It is designed for lifting, turning through 180° and vertical transfer of steel plates.
Q: How thick a plate will it take?
The jaw opening is 0 to 15mm on CL05, 0 to 20mm on CL10, 0 to 25mm on CL20 and 0 to 30mm on CL30.
Q: Can I pick a plate up from flat?
Yes. The hook-up facility allows easy fitment of the clamp to a plate lying in the horizontal position, and the hinged eye lets it be raised from that position.
Q: What does the locking device do?
It holds the jaw closed on the plate so the clamp cannot open accidentally while the load is being handled.
Q: When should I use horizontal clamps instead?
Horizontal clamps, used in pairs, are designed to lift plate flat without turning it. Use a vertical clamp when the plate needs to be lifted on edge or turned.
Q: How often should it be examined?
As a lifting accessory, at least every 6 months by a competent person under LOLER 1998, plus a check of the jaw teeth and lock before each use.
